The best thing about Kalispell is that it consistently brings in people from all over, all year round, with its proximity to a whole host of gorgeous national parks, hiking trails, forests, and even ski and snowboarding mountains in the wintertime. Basically, there is no bad time to visit this enchanting little village in the Rocky Mountains.
When you book an RV in Kalispell, it is a safe bet that you are likely there to witness the jaw-dropping scenery and vast stretches of pristine wilderness for yourself. You hardly have to leave town to enjoy the great outdoors with Lone Pine State Park sitting on the outskirts. There is lots to do there on the park’s trails that wind through meadows of wildflowers and thick forest groves.
Just south of town, you can see Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater body of water in the western United States at a whopping 191.5 square miles. The glacial lake has some of the purest and clearest waters in the world. On the shores of the magnificent Flathead Lake lies the Flathead Lake State Park, a wonderful place to soak in the sights and take a deep breath of fresh air. With thick groves of ponderosa pines and juniper trees, the shores of Flathead Lake State Park have inviting waters perfect for summertime swimming. Another state park worth visiting in the Kalispell area is Wild Horse Island State Park, which is actually located in the middle of Flathead Lake. Only accessible by boat, this magical 2,160-acre island features a vast network of hiking trails, and if you are lucky you might even see the herds of wild horses majestically running around. The Flathead National Forest on the far side of Flathead Lake sits on nearly one million acres of stunning wilderness and recreation area; the forest is also home to beavers, elk, bald eagles, bears, wolverines, and countless other animals.
The main feature of the area, however, is Glacier National Park, a 1,600-square mile masterpiece containing two mountain ranges, over 100 lakes, and over 30 active glaciers which essentially exist as living fossils. Carved by glaciers over 170 million years ago, this vibrant and diverse collection of ecosystems will take your breath away when you rent an RV in Kalispell.
All though Kalispell is primarily a destination suited for outdoors enthusiasts, the town has many fun things to keep you busy and bring variety to your routine. One of the most visited attractions in Kalispell is the Conrad Mansion, built for Charles E. Conrad, the businessman who decided to move out west and start his own town. Considered a “revivalist version of a farmhouse in Normandy”, this wonderful mansion houses an educational museum, beautifully maintained gardens, and offers free tours. The Museum at Central School is an old refurbished school that now houses many exhibits paying homage to the timber industry, the early pioneers, and the natives that lived in the region for thousands for years.
For yet another dose of culture, visit the Hockaday Museum of Art, which seeks to foster and cultivate appreciation for the fine arts in Kalispell. Inspired by the natural beauty of nearby Glacier National Park, artists from all over come to try and duplicate the imagery of Montana, and Hockaday Museum of Art holds many of these pieces in its permanent collection.
In the wintertime, you can hit the slopes and either snowboard or ski at Blackfish or Whitetail Mountains. These family-friendly mountains have extremely affordable rates, and also offer ski and board rentals.
