Highlands, North Carolina has a captivating history, just one of the many reasons why people love to rent an RV in the small mountain town. The town is named for its high elevation in the ancient Appalachian Mountains, and it was founded by Clinton Carter Hutchinson and Samuel Truman Kelsey. The pair sought a location centrally located between New York City, Savannah, Chicago, and New Orleans in the hopes that it might someday become a powerhouse commerce hub in the south. Although these ambitions never came to fruition, Highlands still found a way to become a charming mountain enclave and a hidden gem of a vacation destination.

When you book an RV in Highlands, it will become immediately clear why Highlands is a popular place to visit no matter the time of year. An influx of tourists pours into the tiny town each summer to seek refuge from the humidity and heat of the south, while wintertime tourism offers its own advantages. There are no major cities located close by, but Asheville, North Carolina is less than a two-hour drive away if you feel like taking your Highlands camper rental for a road trip through the spectacular Nantahala National Forest which accounts for nearly all the land surrounding Highlands. You can expect world-class golfing when you visit Highlands, as well as some exceptional wilderness areas too.

The Great Outdoors

Of all the places to visit in the United States, the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina surely ranks among the most gorgeous wilderness areas. Teeming with unimaginable beauty, there is no wonder why Highlands has become a well-known and much-loved vacation spot for nature lovers. The tourism sector of Highlands and other nearby towns relies heavily on nearby state and national parks. Gorges State Park is a second-growth forest that is no more than 20 minutes’ drive outside the small mountain town. The park is open all year round for outdoor recreation, like hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, and mountain biking. There are a few campgrounds, but they only accommodate tent campers.

You can, however, camp out at Oconee State Park on the other side of the North Carolina-South Carolina state line. There are a few lakes at Oconee State Park where you can take a refreshing swim, or go fishing for supper. This temperate rainforest has an assortment of serene waterfalls in addition to several historic buildings scattered throughout the park that you can see while hiking. You and your Highlands RV trailer rental shouldn’t have trouble finding a place to camp overnight in this natural area.

Nantahala National Forest envelops the entire town of Highlands, so it would be a convenient spot to explore during your Highlands motorhome rental vacation. Nantahala National Forest’s name is derived from the Cherokee language, from a word meaning “land of the noonday sun,” a nod to the thick forest canopy that only lets sunlight through during noon time when the sun is directly overhead. There are a half-million acres of scenic nature in the forest, with hidden waterfalls, lots of hiking trails, and several wilderness areas. There are always a handful of campgrounds in large national forests, so you will have a comfortable place to camp when you rent an RV in Highlands.

One of the most visited national parks is only a few hours north of Highlands in southern Tennessee. Great Smoky Mountains National Park welcomes eleven million people each year to delight in its impressive scenery. A lofty sky deck observation tower gives guests the privilege of observing this stunning park from above, offering unbeatable views. The fiery fall foliage is truly a treat to behold while you camp in the forest utilizing your Highlands RV rental. If you love hiking, part of the legendary Appalachian Trail cuts through the forest, letting you see what the grueling, long-distance trek is really like.
