Just a stone’s throw from where the Huron River flows into Lake Erie, the Huron River Valley Resort Marina and Campground is a family-owned and operated campground in northern Ohio. It offers more than 50 scenic acres with river frontage and a whole host of recreational facilities. The campground is within easy access of the Edison Woods Reserve and the Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve.
RV camping at the Huron River Valley Resort includes access to a range of sites, with water and electric (20/30/50 amp) connections. Campers can take advantage of the clean bathroom and shower facilities, not to mention laundry amenities and Wi-Fi, so you can keep in touch with family and friends back home.
You can get active on the basketball and volleyball courts or kick a soccer ball in the open field, with a children’s playground where young campers can let off some steam. There are around six miles of wooded and prairie trails to explore, offering an up-close view of the reserve’s seasonal wildflowers and rare plant species, as well as a boardwalk trail across the extensive wetlands. Horseback riding is also permitted within the Edison Woods Reserve, and it’s renowned for its exceptional birdwatching as part of the Lake Erie Birding Trail.
The Huron River Valley Resort is also just ten minutes’ drive from the Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve. The reserve encompasses 573 acres on the shore of Lake Erie, with freshwater marshes, swamp forests, and upland forest among its ecosystems.
A short drive west along Lake Erie is the Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve. Its coastal wetlands provide a home for nearly 300 bird species. It comprises rugged shorelines in the Sandusky Bay region, with scenic hiking trails accessing its stunning wildflowers. Bird watchers may be treated to sightings of red-tailed hawks, great blue herons, and woodcocks, as well as great horned owls and numerous songbirds.
Campsites at the Huron River Valley Resort Marina and Campground are just eight minutes' drive from Huron, where you’ll find supermarkets if you want to stock up on groceries. There are also gas stations here if you need to fill up your RV rental and several restaurants where you can enjoy a meal out. Alternatively, you can make the 25-minute drive into the city of Sandusky, where you’ll find a more extensive choice of services, supermarkets, and restaurants.
Sandusky serves as the seat of Erie County and is renowned for its family-friendly attractions. You can get your thrills on the roller coasters of the city's sprawling theme park or head to the Merry-Go-Round Museum, where you’ll find a working vintage carousel and beautifully restored wooden animals from antique rides. If you’re interested in the local seafaring history, stop in at the Maritime Museum of Sandusky. Aside from exhibits focused on pirates and shipwrecks in the region, it also features a boat-building workshop where you can see vessels mid-construction.
Sandusky is scattered with historic residences, many of which have been transformed into fascinating museums. You can admire the Greek Revival architecture of the Follett House Museum or browse the antique furnishings of the Cooke-Dorn House Historic Site. Previously home to one of the city’s first settlers, Eleutheros Cooke, the elegant residence has been restored to its 1950's appearance.
If you’re traveling with kids, don’t miss a visit to the African Safari Wildlife Park near Port Clinton. The 100-acre preserve offers a drive-through experience, allowing you to observe the animals grazing from the comfort of your vehicle. Get up close to giraffes, zebras, buffalos, and bison, as well as giant eland and Bactrian camels, with a container of food provided so you can hand-feed the animals. Aside from its safari enclosure, the park is also home to American alligators, red kangaroos, and a gibbon-filled island, not to mention a small petting zoo.
