Whalen Island County Campground is open all year round. Just over 30 sites dot this pleasant campground on Whalen Island, with tent sites and RV sites available. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire pit, but there is no electricity at this rustic slice of heaven by the shore. Potable water, restrooms, and a dump station are on-site.

One of the easiest things to do while in Oregon is finding a nature park or recreation area to visit. Cape Lookout State Park is found several miles north of the campsites at Whalen Island County Campground, occupying a sliver of land between Netarts Bay and the ocean. Magical sunsets and sunrises over the water help establish the park as a special place to visit, and it has some extremely tranquil hiking paths overlooking the sea. Bob Straub State Park is not far from Pacific City, home to towering sand dunes, much like Sand Lake Recreation Area. Visitors can do some horseback riding, hiking, fishing, surfing, swimming, or birdwatching, and sunset views from the lofty sand dunes are a treat for onlookers.
Tillamook State Forest is by the town of Tillamook. It offers a delightful opportunity to explore the wilds of Oregon, in one of the country’s rainiest places. This 300,000-acre temperate rainforest has a diverse mix of animals, plants, and fungi, so you can forage for edible mushrooms or photograph rare plant life while hiking through on one of its many trails. Mountain biking is also a great way to get around the forest, while you search for hidden waterfalls and other landmarks.
