The Great Outdoors

Mathis campers who don't want to stray far from the campsites at Mustang Hollow should consider visiting Lake Corpus Christi State Park. This park is located just a short drive from Mathis and consists of woodlands and beaches around the 18,000-acre Lake Corpus Christi. Fishing is a favorite pastime at the lake, and anglers often reel in catfish, bass, and crappie, with two fishing piers for easy access to the lake. Boating is another popular activity, and there are two boat ramps located at the park. If you'd prefer to stay on dry land, check out several hiking trails looping around the lake. During your hike, keep an eye out for bird residents, including black-bellied whistling ducks and Neotropic cormorants.Another popular lakeside state park worth visiting is Choke Canyon State Park. This park is situated just a short drive north of Mustang Hollow Campground and features fields and thickets of trees encircling the 26,000-acre Choke Canyon Reservoir. Similarly to Lake Corpus Christi, this area is excellent for fishing, and common catches include largemouth bass and catfish. Boating is also popular, and there's a boat ramp to make things easier for larger vessels. This park is a hotbed for wildlife, and if you plan on hiking around the lake, keep an eye out for a variety of mammals, including raccoons, javelinas, skunks, and more. You'll no doubt want to explore the oceanfront with your campervan rental near Mathis, and one of the best ways to see the area is by visiting Mustang Island State Park. This park is located on a barrier island overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. It features five miles of sandy beaches and seaside brush to explore. Kayaking and canoeing are popular pastimes here, and there are over 20 miles of paddling trails to follow which lead through the scenic Corpus Christi Bay. The beaches are ideal for topping up your tan or splashing around the surf, and if you're planning a walk along the beach, watch out for local birds, including American white pelicans, glossy ibis, and white-tailed hawks.

Exploring the City

When you rent a motorhome in southeastern Texas, you'll have access to many exciting cities, full of excellent attractions. Corpus Christi is one of the closest major cities, and this seaside community offers lots for RVers to enjoy. The USS Lexington is one of Corpus Christi's best historical sights. This retired aircraft carrier was built for use during World War II. Visitors can tour the ship, explore the engine rooms, and stand on the flight deck. This museum also offers other attractions, including escape rooms and a 3-D cinema. There are some high-class cultural attractions in Corpus Christi, and one of the best is The Art Museum of South Texas. This art museum focuses on displaying art by regional artists, with over 1,800 paintings in the museum's permanent collection. There's a wide range of mediums on show at the museum, from sculptures to installations to photography. This museum is packed with works by local artists and is well worth visiting if you want to learn more about the area's culture. For an activity that the whole family will love, plan a trip to the Texas State Aquarium. Questions about RVs?

Q.

What type of RV should I choose?

A.

Start by determining how many people are planning to travel with you. Going on a solo-journey? Choose a camper van or a teardrop trailer. Bringing the whole family along for the ride? Consider a spacious Class A or five-wheel.

You’ll also want to consider amenities. For example, if you’re planning to cook on the road, you’ll want a kitchenette. If your campground doesn’t have public restrooms, you’ll want to search RVs with bathrooms. Check out full descriptions of our models to help you decide here.

Q.

Do the RVs have bathrooms?

A.

Yes. Class A’s, Class B’s, and Class C’s and five-Wheels typically have bathrooms. Depending on where you plan on camping, you’ll want to double-check the availability of restrooms if selecting a rig without a bathroom. Nervous about renting an RV with a bathroom? Owners can help show you how to clean the tank or will offer to do it for you for a fee.

Q.

How does check-in work?

A.

Once an Owner approves your RV reservation, you can coordinate a time to pick up your rig or have it delivered to your doorstep or campsite. At that point, the owner will do a key exchange with you and walk you through the RV and answer any questions you might have.
