Lake Corpus Christi is ideal if you love getting outdoors, and the lake is suitable for many watersports, including paddling, fishing, and swimming. When you camp in an RV at Mustang Hollow Campground, you'll have all the amenities you need for an excellent vacation. There are over 125 campsites, the majority of which supply full hookups that support 30/50 amp electrics. There's space for big rigs here, and pull-through or back-in sites are available. Mustang Hollow campsites come with some added extras, such as picnic tables and fire rings, and there are lots of basic amenities around the campground, including restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and more.
Camping in the Texas Gulf Coast region provides access to lots of cities and plenty of diverse parks. Mustang Hollow Campground is just a stone's throw from Corpus Christi, one of the best coastal cities in Texas. Other major urban areas, including San Antonio and Victoria, are less than 90 minutes' drive away. There's a wide variety of landscapes to explore near Mathis, with the seaside, lakes, and lots of lush forests to explore within an hour's drive of the RV campground.
Mathis campers who don't want to stray far from the campsites at Mustang Hollow should consider visiting Lake Corpus Christi State Park. This park is located just a short drive from Mathis and consists of woodlands and beaches around the 18,000-acre Lake Corpus Christi. Fishing is a favorite pastime at the lake, and anglers often reel in catfish, bass, and crappie, with two fishing piers for easy access to the lake. Boating is another popular activity, and there are two boat ramps located at the park. If you'd prefer to stay on dry land, check out several hiking trails looping around the lake. During your hike, keep an eye out for bird residents, including black-bellied whistling ducks and Neotropic cormorants.
Another popular lakeside state park worth visiting is Choke Canyon State Park. This park is situated just a short drive north of Mustang Hollow Campground and features fields and thickets of trees encircling the 26,000-acre Choke Canyon Reservoir. Similarly to Lake Corpus Christi, this area is excellent for fishing, and common catches include largemouth bass and catfish. Boating is also popular, and there's a boat ramp to make things easier for larger vessels. This park is a hotbed for wildlife, and if you plan on hiking around the lake, keep an eye out for a variety of mammals, including raccoons, javelinas, skunks, and more.
You'll no doubt want to explore the oceanfront with your campervan rental near Mathis, and one of the best ways to see the area is by visiting Mustang Island State Park. This park is located on a barrier island overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. It features five miles of sandy beaches and seaside brush to explore. Kayaking and canoeing are popular pastimes here, and there are over 20 miles of paddling trails to follow which lead through the scenic Corpus Christi Bay. The beaches are ideal for topping up your tan or splashing around the surf, and if you're planning a walk along the beach, watch out for local birds, including American white pelicans, glossy ibis, and white-tailed hawks.

This retired aircraft carrier was built for use during World War II. Visitors can tour the ship, explore the engine rooms, and stand on the flight deck. This museum also offers other attractions, including escape rooms and a 3-D cinema.
There are some high-class cultural attractions in Corpus Christi, and one of the best is The Art Museum of South Texas. This art museum focuses on displaying art by regional artists, with over 1,800 paintings in the museum's permanent collection. There's a wide range of mediums on show at the museum, from sculptures to installations to photography. This museum is packed with works by local artists and is well worth visiting if you want to learn more about the area's culture.
For an activity that the whole family will love, plan a trip to the Texas State Aquarium. This huge aquarium is the largest in Texas, with thousands of aquatic critters on display, including bottlenose dolphins, sandbar sharks, and sea turtles. The aquarium also offers animal encounters, where visitors can meet dolphins and feed turtles.
