The Great Outdoors

There’s so much to do outside when you go RV camping near McAllen, TX. One of the most popular destinations is Boca Chica State Park, which is just south of South Padre Island. Boca Chica is known for having the most pristine beach in the area. It’s rarely crowded, so you can relax and enjoy swimming with relative privacy. Many people enjoy surf fishing and crabbing in this area as well. It’s also a great place for wildlife watching - you’ll see some unique bird species, as well as sea turtles and potentially even some jellyfish. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can also go snorkeling, kiteboarding, or surfing here. However, you’ll need to bring your own gear, as the beach is remote. You can find gear rentals on nearby South Padre Island, which is also known for its beautiful beaches. The Estero Llano Grande State Park is another beautiful outdoor area to visit while motorhome camping in McAllen. It’s very close to the campground, making it a convenient destination for some laid-back bird watching. Hundreds of different bird species have been documented in the park, which is why it’s become such a popular destination for birding. Five miles of walking trails run through the park, which will take you through beautiful wetland scenery.Farther west in McAllen is the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park. This is another very popular destination for birding, as migratory birds often pass through the area. The park offers guided tram tours where you can learn more about the birds. You can also tour the area on foot along the seven miles of trails in the park. Many of the trails allow bikes, and you can choose to rent a bike from a park store if you wish. Both McAllen and Harlingen also have urban hiking and biking trails to explore, which are great options if you’re traveling with kids and want an easy hiking or biking option.

Exploring The Area

Camping in a McAllen RV makes it easy to explore the Brownsville area, which is a popular vacation destination due to its warm weather and proximity to the beach. The Gladys Porter Zoo is a very popular attraction, particularly among families. History lovers will also want to visit the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park, which is the site of the notable 1846 battle between Mexico and the United States. Another popular attraction in Brownsville is the Sabal Palm Sanctuary, which is an 1892 plantation that has been converted into a nature sanctuary for plant and animal wildlife. There’s also a lot to do in the towns of Harlingen and McAllen, both of which are easy to visit when you book an RV in Hidalgo County. In McAllen, you’ll find the International Museum of Art and Science, which has an eclectic mix of art and educational exhibits. You can also tour Quinta Mazatlan, which is a stunning estate with outdoor trails and traditional architecture.Harlingen is home to many beautiful city parks, as well as the charming Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum. Because of the area’s proximity to Mexico, you’ll find several delicious Mexican restaurants here, which are a perfect option if you don’t feel like cooking at the Southern Comfort RV campsite. The resort is right outside the town of Weslaco, which means you won’t have to sacrifice any urban comforts during your camping trip. There, you’ll find grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, banks, and anything else you might need while on the road.

Questions about RVs?

Q.

What type of RV should I choose?

A.

Start by determining how many people are planning to travel with you. Going on a solo-journey? Choose a camper van or a teardrop trailer. Bringing the whole family along for the ride? Consider a spacious Class A or five-wheel.

You’ll also want to consider amenities. For example, if you’re planning to cook on the road, you’ll want a kitchenette. If your campground doesn’t have public restrooms, you’ll want to search RVs with bathrooms. Check out full descriptions of our models to help you decide here.

Q.

Do the RVs have bathrooms?

A.

Yes. Class A’s, Class B’s, and Class C’s and five-Wheels typically have bathrooms. Depending on where you plan on camping, you’ll want to double-check the availability of restrooms if selecting a rig without a bathroom. Nervous about renting an RV with a bathroom? Owners can help show you how to clean the tank or will offer to do it for you for a fee.

Q.

How does check-in work?

A.

Once an Owner approves your RV reservation, you can coordinate a time to pick up your rig or have it delivered to your doorstep or campsite. At that point, the owner will do a key exchange with you and walk you through the RV and answer any questions you might have.
