The Great Outdoors

Camping at the Citrus Valley RV Park MHP is a good base for exploring the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, which lies around 30 minutes’ drive from the resort. It serves as the headquarters for the World Birding Center, an organization that manages a group of nine parks and nature preserves in the Rio Grande Valley. Collectively they provide a sanctuary for over 500 recorded species of birds, as well as more than 250 butterfly species. Aside from keeping your eyes peeled for birds and butterflies, you may be treated to rare sightings of ocelot and jaguarundi as you explore the hiking trails of this 764-acre park. Also along the banks of the Rio Grande is the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, which lies at the meeting point of subtropical wetlands, the Chihuahuan Desert, and the Gulf Coast. Aside from osprey, broad-winged hawks, and blue-winged teals, the refuge’s observation towers and elevated walkways offer sightings of around 300 butterfly species (around half of all butterflies recorded in the United States). If you’re happy to drive a little farther from the McAllen RV park, you can head east to the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, which overlooks a body of water fringed by South Padre Island. Its 98,000 acres supports large numbers of endangered and threatened species. The Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is particularly renowned for its breeding pairs of northern aplomado falcons, some of which were captive-bred and reintroduced to the area in the 1980s by the Peregrine Fund.

Exploring the City

Campsites at the Citrus Valley RV Park MHP are around 15 minutes’ drive from the center of Edinburg or 20 minutes from McAllen. Both cities are home to several supermarkets where you can shop for groceries and supplies. There are also plenty of gas stations in the immediate vicinity if you need to fill up your RV rental and a wide selection of eateries that will appeal to all tastes. If you’re after a cultural fix, head to the International Museum of Art & Science, which features a diverse range of exhibits that include Latin American artworks, Picasso lithographs, and Japanese prints. Marvel at the images taken from the Hubble Space Telescope and wander through the sculpture garden, then admire the impressive collection of European artwork dating from the 16th to 19th centuries. Also in McAllen is the McAllen Nature Center, which began life in 1962 as a botanical garden focused on palms. It now encompasses 33 acres of native thorn scrub habitat that’s traversed by around 1.6 miles of walking trails. Surrounded by woodlands, don’t miss a visit to the Quinta Mazatlan, a Spanish Revival estate. Its tropical gardens feature more than 250 bird species.History buffs should make a beeline for the Museum of South Texas History in nearby Edinburg, which occupies three large buildings overlooking the city’s main square. Its exhibits include prehistoric dinosaurs and an ice age mammoth, together with cultural artifacts belonging to the Coahuiltecan Indians. Discover what life was like in the Rio Grande Valley during the Civil War and the Mexican Revolution before browsing the extensive collection of South Texas history books in the museum store. Also of note is the McAllen Heritage Center, which details the people and events that have shaped the region in the city’s former post office.Whether you want to spot butterflies in the wildlife refuges along the Rio Grande or get cultured in the museums of Edinburg and McAllen, book an RV rental in Hidalgo County and start planning your visit.

Questions about RVs?

Q.

What type of RV should I choose?

A.

Start by determining how many people are planning to travel with you. Going on a solo-journey? Choose a camper van or a teardrop trailer. Bringing the whole family along for the ride? Consider a spacious Class A or five-wheel.

You’ll also want to consider amenities. For example, if you’re planning to cook on the road, you’ll want a kitchenette. If your campground doesn’t have public restrooms, you’ll want to search RVs with bathrooms. Check out full descriptions of our models to help you decide here.

Q.

Do the RVs have bathrooms?

A.

Yes. Class A’s, Class B’s, and Class C’s and five-Wheels typically have bathrooms. Depending on where you plan on camping, you’ll want to double-check the availability of restrooms if selecting a rig without a bathroom. Nervous about renting an RV with a bathroom? Owners can help show you how to clean the tank or will offer to do it for you for a fee.

Q.

How does check-in work?

A.

Once an Owner approves your RV reservation, you can coordinate a time to pick up your rig or have it delivered to your doorstep or campsite. At that point, the owner will do a key exchange with you and walk you through the RV and answer any questions you might have.
