The capital of England and one of the most diverse cities in Europe, London is a cosmopolitan city founded back in 47 AD by Romans settlers. The city of London is a collection of boroughs and villages that have since merged into one hectic city. This development gives each neighborhood a unique character and more than a few quirks. As you explore this ever-expanding world center, you’ll begin to understand the quote, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”

The city streets of London are fairly narrow due to their ancient medieval layout and are usually jam-packed with traffic. Instead of paying the congestion charge for driving your London motorhome rental around the city center, you might want to park the motorhome rental and just hop on the Tube or an iconic red double-decker bus. Public transport runs almost 24 hours a day, and you’ll be able to get anywhere in and around the city in no time at all. There are also several cross-country trains if you want to travel farther out of the city.

Don’t let the busy city vibe of London deter you from planning an outdoor adventure. When you book an RV in Greater London, you’ll have easy access to plenty of other English cities, including Cambridge, Southend-on-Sea, and Portsmouth. As soon as you leave the London metro area, you’ll begin to discover the great British countryside, made up of forests, heathland, quiet lakes, and rolling hills. Even the coast isn’t that far away. You'll have no problem exploring the diverse landscapes of Greater London with a London caravan rental.

Discover London

The Great Outdoors

England boasts miles upon miles of natural beauty, much of which is preserved in the country's Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs). These protected areas are ideal locations for hiking, enjoying outdoor sports, or just spending the day in the fresh air.

If you’re looking for a quick day trip, you'll find plenty of AONBs around London. To the west are the Chiltern Hills, and to the south are the Surrey Hills and High Weald. At each of these places, you can stroll along some fairly easy trails, view medieval churches, and admire Victorian or even Edwardian manors and mansions. AONBs offer the perfect break from the hustle and bustle of London life.

If you want to travel a little further, then South Downs National Park, about an hour south of London, is the place to go. Just north of the South West Coast, the mild climate has created a lush landscape that draws visitors and locals alike. South Down National Park protects the natural landscape of the lowland region while also supporting the people who live there. You can still see the breathtaking chalk-white cliffs that South West England is so famous for, learn about English history and Neolithic settlements, and go walking through the countryside.

About two hours west of London are the Cotswolds, rightly considered some of the most beautiful landscapes in southern England. Driving through the Cotswolds with a London RV rental will reward you with views of rugged hills, green pastures, and picturesque medieval villages. However, if you’re looking for a bit of a challenge, the Cotswolds Way may be for you. This hiking trail crosses the Cotswolds, starting in the north or the south. You can stop at the villages as you come across them and enjoy a pint in the local pub.

Camping in London

Due to the population and infrastructure density of the city, you won't find many caravan or RV parks in London itself. If you’re looking for somewhere to park your motorhome rental near London, you’re going to have to drive to the outskirts of the city.

On the east end of town is the Abbey Wood Caravan and Motorhome Club Site. Situated on a lovely green space with full-grown trees and the River Thames to the north, Abbey Wood offers a nice escape for you and the London camper rental. With a playground, on-site toilets and showers, and nearby river cruises, you’ll be able to break away from the modern world and relax in the peace and quiet.

Just north of the city is the Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park. This is a fantastic destination for more active travelers as it’s connected to a sports and outdoors complex. At the caravan site, you'll have access to electrical hookups, Wi-Fi, water, and even a golf course and cinema.

Exploring the City

London has virtually always been center stage when it comes to world affairs, and as you walk the city’s streets, you can feel the city's rich cultural diversity. When you rent an RV near London, you’ll have the freedom to travel this unique metropolis on your own schedule. However, you may find yourself parking your RV at a caravan park and exploring the world of London on foot.

Many English celebrities live in London, and there’s always a chance that you’ll run into one while out and about. However, you can almost certainly see a well-known face at one of the many theaters in London’s West End. There are approximately 40 theaters in London’s theater district. Countless pubs hosting live performances are also spread throughout the city. These pub theaters, such as the Finborough Theatre, offer an intimate atmosphere for the performance as well as a chance to share a pint with the cast and crew and learn even more about the show.

There's certainly no shortage of activities and things to see and do in London. If you head into the city center, you can see Roman ruins, historic castles, and Buckingham Palace, watch street performers, stroll lush gardens, walk along the Thames, and see the recreated Globe Theatre, standing only 300 feet away from the ruins of the Shakespeare’s original Globe. But at the end of the day, make your way to a pub of your choice, tuck into some pie and chips with a pint, and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere of London.
