While exploring the city, be sure to visit the National Railway Museum in York. This museum pays homage to the British railway system. Wander through the museum and learn how this mode of transportation helped transform a nation through the invention of the steam engine. Visitors can board a railcar and take a journey through a miniature railway system. If you time your visit just right, you just might see the Flying Scotsman. This locomotive, which is owned by the museum and tours the UK throughout the year, broke two world records when it became the first steam engine to achieve a top speed of 100 miles per hour in 1934. York Minster is an essential stop for tourists. A place of worship has stood on this site since the seventh century AD, but construction of the magnificent cathedral you'll tour today began in the 11th century and took more than 200 years to complete. People of all faiths have toured York Minister and viewed over 300,000 artifacts in the Undercroft Museum. The breathtaking architecture and well-kept grounds of the cathedral draw thousands of visitors each year. Climb the tower for sweeping views of the city. The Jorvik Viking Center is a must-see, featuring reconstructed Viking dwellings and workshops. The Vikings made their home near York, or Jorvik, in the ninth century, and the Jorvik Viking Center houses a museum with thousands of Viking artifacts on display. Attend a reenactment of daily life in a Viking village, and even dress up like the Vikings. The remains of authentic Viking wooden homes are one of the many highlights of a visit to Jorvik Viking Center.
