Getting Outdoors

Elkhart Park is a topographic photographer’s dream. Large mountain ranges carve up the horizon and make for a gorgeous scenic backdrop. Pristine lakes, big skies, and a vast ecosystem of flora and fauna — bring your camera and document this world of natural wonder. Whether it's crystal-clear lakes, green hiking trails, or birds like the mountain bluebird, Wilson’s phalarope, or horned larks, Elkhart Park has you covered.

Island Lake is another fairytale-esque area worthy of photography. Take the family to this sparkling lake, and don’t forget to bring your fishing rod. You’ll be hard-pressed to find better trout fishing in Elkhart Park. It’s also a picturesque place to go for a swim. There are a few trails that will lead you right to Island Lake and a few trails from the lake up to Fremont Peak.

If it’s hiking you’re looking to do, Elkhart Park Trailhead is one of the most scenic routes you can take. It leads right through the Wind River Range and will take you all the way up to Wyoming’s highest point, Gannett Peak. The trail will also take you through Titcomb Basin and up to Fremont Peak. Camping at Elkhart Park

There's a small campground at Elkhart Park called Trail’s End. It includes eight campsites, vault toilets, and a corral. The maximum length for RV campers is 60 feet, but most sites accommodate vehicles between 20 and 30 feet long. The campground offers non-potable water and access to tons of nearby lakes, hiking trails, and mountain ranges.

One good place to camp in an RV near Elkhart Park is Highline Trail RV Park. This campground offers over 45 campsites for RVs, all of which are equipped with full hookups. Its location at the base of the Wind River Mountains means Pinedale campers don’t have to go far to enjoy some hiking, biking, and swimming. Amenities include 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups, pull-through sites, and dump stations. You’ll also find Wi-Fi, drinking water, toilets, and hot showers for guests. The campground is on a wide-open field where campers can roam and play.

Another place to consider parking your camper rental near Pinedale is at the Daniel Junction RV Park in Daniel. The campground features 20 sites for RVs that come equipped with full hookups and WiFi. Near the park, you’ll have access to shopping, eateries, and a grocery store.

Wind River View Campground in Boulder is a short drive south of the park and is another good place to go RV camping near Elkhart Park. Within a few miles, you’ll find swimming lakes, hiking trails, and places to shop. Amenities at Wind River View include a bathhouse, laundry facilities, and Wi-Fi. Electrical hookups with 30-amp service come standard, and you're a short drive from Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and a series of rivers and lakes.

Exploring the Area

Pinedale is a gorgeous town packed with parks and wildlife watching opportunities. The town is surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges. The Wind River Range, the Wyoming Range, and the Gros Ventre Range provide beauty and privacy to the town of Pinedale. Outdoor enthusiasts will be in paradise here. Find yourself hiking the scenic trails of Yellowstone National Park. Take a dip in a stream at Grand Teton National Park. Marvel at the unfathomable Jackson Hole mountain range. Pinedale is where peace and natural wonder come to play.

If it’s culture you’re looking for, look no further than the town center. Pinedale is steeped in Western culture that can be found in art galleries, fairs, and festivals. Check out the town's events schedule to see what's happening during your visit. One place to experience a taste of Pinedale's Wild West heritage is Sommers Homestead Living History Museum. This recreated homestead offers a glimpse of what life was like for a Wyoming farmer in the early 20th century. The main attraction here is the log cabin, which houses farming tools and era artifacts. The kids can even enjoy the olden-style seesaw and carousel.

The Museum of the Mountain Man is another popular place to check out while you’re in the area. Thousands of artifacts document the legacy of Pinedale's Rocky Mountain Fur Company traders. On your tour, you'll get to see the belongings of some of the area's most famous pioneers and trappers, including weapons, clothing, and tools of the fur trade. Also on display are Native American artifacts discovered in the Gros Ventre Mountains.

If you're ready for a seriously scenic drive, saddle up and hit Highway 189 to get a glimpse of the Green River Drift Cattle Drive. Each spring and fall since the late 19th century, cowboys have steered their steers from their summer pastures along this cattle trail. If you're visiting around October or March, you might just get to see this phenomenon, in which thousands of cattle walk the 60-mile route from desert to forest or vice versa.

Within a short drive from the park, you’ll find a few gas stations and some restaurants where you can fill up and get ready to hit the road. Between Pinedale and Daniel, there are a ton of Mexican restaurants, steakhouses, and pizzerias. I-80 is the next closest major road. It's located south of the park and can lead you all the way to Cheyanne.
