Owner of the Week: Amy Powers

The last time we talked to Amy Powers, the year was 2018, and she was running her rental business on the side. Her husband Tommy was still working full-time for the US Postal Service, and she was earning most of her income as a hairdresser.

Recently, the Powers’ and their business partner Isaac Gunderson took an incredible leap. “Tommy and Isaac quit the USPS, and we are doing this full-time,” says Amy. “We sold our home and moved onto 10 acres. We built a 3,200-square-foot shop so we can remodel and repair campers for ourselves and others. This way, with renting, we also can fix what needs to be fixed when damage occurs, from roofs to plumbing issues. We are hoping to get our service truck in motion for mobile RV repair, helping others that rent campers and assisting with winterization. We are so excited to see all of this in motion and rolling.”

This really is a big step, and many might be wondering what measures the business team has taken to ensure they were ready for such a change. Amy’s answer? “We didn’t! We just jumped. We took a risk. We left all fear of failure behind.”

“We looked at numbers and knew we found a niche. We have always been risk-takers, going back to our days as a young married couple at 18. We are now in our early thirties, and we’ve realized life is short and not guaranteed. We cherish family, and this allows us to all be together on the land and grow our business.”

In 2018, the Powers had a total of four rental units. Now their fleet has grown to include even more options. “We have slowly added a few more cash campers and will continue to reinvest to have as many as we can,” Amy shares. “You have to spend money to make money, and this is our motto.”

That shop they built? They’re using it to add to their fleet right now. “We are currently in the process of remodeling five additional campers,” she says. “They are all 17-ish feet long, towable with a small SUV. We also have a few enclosed trailers and a 10-passenger van we rent out. We have thought about remodeling them into toy haulers. We really didn’t think we would have this many from where we started, but once we realized there was a need, we rolled with it and haven’t looked back.”

Clearly, Amy, Tommy, and Issac have done a fantastic job creating and growing their rental business together. However, they haven’t lost sight of what got them into this business, to begin with. “We love every angle of camping, from board games to campfires to fishing and the simplicity of it all,” Amy tells us. “Our biggest goal when we send out a camper is that each family creates memories and truly enjoys the camping experience.”
