Introduction

Surrounded by majestic farmland, Delaware State Park is the perfect place for RV lovers thanks to the beautiful meadows, woodlands, and a 1,300-acre reservoir. Located just north of the city of Delaware, OH this state park is a must for your next RV outing. You'll enjoy opportunities for outdoor recreation in a unique landscape. From hiking and fishing to wildlife watching and boating, Delaware State Park offers a huge variety of outdoor fun.

The farmland views of Delaware State Park are jaw-dropping and the area is home to many species of flora and fauna. History enthusiasts will love learning about the Delaware tribe that resided in the area and joined forces with other tribes to block the western expansion of settlers.

After you are finished with the many water-based recreation activities at the park, you can head out on to one of the four hiking trails around the park. The Dam Trail is a one-mile easy trip that will provide you with gorgeous scenery and possibly sighting a songbird or two along the water's edge of the dam. Another popular trail is the Big Foot Trail since it is an easy mile and a half venture through scenic meadows and woodlands.

Delaware State Park is home to one large campground that is suitable for campers of all skill levels and experience. There are over 200 sites to choose from, all of which come equipped with electric hookups. The peak season at Delaware State Park runs from April to October.

Transportation

Driving

Delaware State Park is easy to access by car or RV, thanks to its convenient location around five miles north of the city of Delaware. The park has one entrance that is accessible via Interstate 71, and the roads within the park are well maintained. There are no driving restrictions for RVs or trailers in the park, so you'll be able to get around easily, whether you're in your RV or another vehicle.

If you need to get any supplies before your visit luckily the park is located near many populated areas. These include Delaware (around six miles away), Prospect (around 11 miles away), and Sunbury (around 17 miles away). The closest city to the park is Columbus, which is around 31 miles to the south.

The area in and around Delaware State Park is known to have a very high snowfall during the cooler months, so if you are planning to visit the park during this time make sure you are prepared for these adverse conditions.

Parking

There are lots of options for parking trailers and RVs, with nine lots throughout the park. You will find spots at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Operations Headquarters, marina, picnic areas, and near the trails.

Delaware State Park Campground

Delaware State Park offers 211 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents all year-round. The campsites are all located within four loops, and all sites have access to electricity so you can vacation in style.

The sites at the campground are known to be very spacious, level, and feature partial shading from the sun. Each site also comes equipped with a grill, picnic table, and fire ring. Campground-wide amenities include laundry facilities, showers, restrooms, and a dump station. If you are looking for some recreational activities for the kids nearby there are basketball and volleyball courts available. You can even rent games and sporting equipment at the campground office. Pets are also allowed, and you should be able to get phone service on all of the major networks.

Reservations are recommended for visitors who are planning a trip during the summer months. They can be made from one day up to six months in advance.

Alternate camping

Yurts at Delaware State Park

If you are looking to get out of the RV during your visit to Delaware State Park you should consider staying at one of the three yurts that are located within the campground. The yurts are a great way to experience a different accommodation type and come equipped with a ceiling fan to help keep temperatures down, a cooler, table and chairs, and futon beds. There are no kitchen amenities within the yurts but outside you are able to cook up a storm thanks to the covered charcoal grill.

The yurts are only available to travelers who are visiting during the warmer months of May through to October, and they can be reserved via calling the park or through the online system. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed to stay in the yurts.

Off-Season

Picknicking

If you wish to have an enjoyable lunch away from the campground with a large group of friends or your family, park your rig at one of two reservable shelter houses. These picnic areas overlook the lake, have 112 parking spots, two small charcoal grills, and 11 picnic tables to make any outing a spectacular event. The beach and marina are one mile away, and there is a playground nearby so the kids can stay entertained. Reservations for the shelters are available online or by calling the park, and pets are permitted in these areas.

Exploring Fort Morrow

Delaware State Park features remnants of Fort Morrow just waiting for you to explore during your RV road trip. The black tavern of the fort was built way back in 1810, and a palisade was added to complete the fort so that it could provide local settlers with some protection during the War of 1812. While the fort was never attacked it gives visitors a great glimpse into what life used to be like for the locals of the area. Now registered on National Register of Historic Places, the ruins of Fort Morrow are a must-see.

Wildlife Viewing

Delaware State Park is home to numerous species of wildlife, so you will want to ensure that you pack your binoculars before beginning your journey to the park. Some of the native wildlife you may encounter include fox, squirrel, bears, woodchuck, rabbit, and white-tailed deer. The reservoir area is a hot spot for waterfowl and the park grounds provide you with ample viewing areas for watching ring-necked pheasant.

Fishing

If you are an avid angler you will be very happy to know that you will have the chance to cast your reel at Delaware State Park. The park has a fishing area on Delaware Lake that is perfect for people of all ages wanting to try and catch the big one. There are several species of fish that you may be able to catch during your outings, such as muskie, small and largemouth bass, and crappie. Should you need to purchase any fishing supplies you can do so at the marina located within the park.

Swimming

Looking to cool off from the summertime heat? Delaware State Park is a great place for you to bring your swimsuit and take a dip thanks to the 800-foot public beach that is located within the park. The beach is the only place that you are allowed to swim during your visit, and there is no lifeguard present at any time. Once you have dried off there are plenty of great facilities you can use to top off your visit to the beach, including a bathhouse, showers, and a snack bar.

Hiking

You will want to ensure that you pack your hiking boots in your motorhome for your trip to Delaware State Park since there are five hiking trails to choose from that are suitable for all skill levels. Should you need a relaxing short hike or stroll, head over to Fisherman Trail. This short trail takes you along the wetlands and showcases the beautiful scenery around you. For a longer hike, check out the nearly two-mile Lakeview Trail, which will take you further along the spectacular reservoir and meadows.
