Introduction

Located in Graham County, Arizona near Willcox, Fourmile Canyon Campground is a secluded and tranquil camping area. It is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and taken well care of by those who stay there. There are unique vegetation species that fill the area. Everywhere you look there are towering grey pine trees and small cacti that paint the scenery. On top of beautiful scenery, Fourmile Canyon Campground has plenty of critters that call it home.

There are desert animals like rattlesnakes, horned toads, and spiders in the area. You’ll also see Gila monsters, sheep, mountain lions, and more. There are a handful of campsites where you can rest your head after a long day filled with activities. You can go hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, and more while visiting Fourmile Canyon Campground.

If the campground is full, there are a couple of great alternatives nearby. It’s best to visit during the fall and spring to beat the Arizona heat. If it is hot during your time visiting, there are plenty of nearby rivers and creeks where you can cool off and relax.

Getting to Fourmile Canyon Campground is fairly simple. Arizona is one of the easier states to navigate because it’s flat desert throughout most of the state. And as wild as this area may seem, it's only 150 miles from Tuscon. Fourmile Canyon Campground is located in a hilly and mountain-like area, which is unique to the state. It lies upon Fourmile Creek Road that is near the Klondyke Wash.

Some of the roads in the area are very curvy and full of sharp turns. If you’re driving a large vehicle like an RV or pulling a trailer, be sure to proceed with caution. There aren’t any major highways that are super close to Fourmile Canyon Campground which has its own pros and cons. You’re in the middle of nowhere and it’s peaceful, but it’s also not the most conveniently located campground.

Cell phone reception in the area can be spotty. For this reason, it is encouraged to bring a backup set of directions in the event that you lose service. When you arrive at Fourmile Canyon Campground, there are a few ways that you can get around. The most popular options of on foot or via mountain bike.

First-come first-served

Fourmile Canyon Campground

This semi-developed campground is open 365 days per year. There are 19 campsites in total, giving people who stay here a sense of privacy amongst crowds. Each of the 19 campsites is available on a first-come, first-served basis at no cost. There are also picnic tables and fire rings available at each campsite as well. Fourmile Canyon Campground offers modern restrooms to all campers.

Depending on the time of year that you visit, you’ll likely have access to drinking water as well. One thing that may surprise campers unless they know the area well is that there are free-roaming cattle in the area. You may be relaxing and enjoying a campfire while a cow is munching on some grass a few feet from the RV. It’s also important to note that campers are required to bring their own firewood. There are a handful of places that sell it in Casper.

Riggs Flat Campground

Riggs Flat Campground is a popular choice for anglers visiting the area. It is one of the biggest campgrounds in the area, meaning you will likely always find an open campsite. Speaking of, there are 31 campsites in total at Riggs Flat Campground. All are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site is equipped with a fire pit, grill, and picnic table. There are vault toilets that are provided by Riggs Flat Campground.

That’s it for amenities at this campground. There is no drinking water and it’s suggested to bring your firewood. Something that’s important to note is that this area is prone to wild bears. With that being said, it is crucial to put your garbage in the bear-proof containers that the campground provides to campers. If you do see a bear during your stay at Riggs Flat Campground, never approach it and move slowly to a safer place.

Hospital Flat Campground

Hospital Flat Campground is open to the public from the third week in May through the end of September. Hospital Flat Campground is a loop of campsites that are next to the river. The campsites at this campground are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They are equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring. Hospital Flat Campground also has restrooms and running water for those who camp there.

While camping is available for larger rigs as well as tents, there are no hookups available for RV campers. Hospital Flat Campground is surrounded by sequoias and grey pines. There is easy access to hiking trails, a river, and more daytime activities. The Kern River offers kayaking, rafting, fishing, and other summertime pastimes. When Fourmile Canyon Campground is full, this is a great alternative. There is plenty of space for families and large camping groups at Hospital Flat Campground in Arizona.

Hiking

Hiking is one of the most popular activities that people enjoy during their stay at the Fourmile Canyon Campground. There are a variety of different trailheads throughout the area. Be sure to wear hiking boots to keep your feet comfortable on the rough terrain.

Rock Climbing

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, you may want to bring your rock climbing gear with you to Fourmile Canyon Campground. There are a few different areas that off perfect rock climbing opportunities for visitors.

Wildlife Viewing

There are several animals living within Fourmile Canyon. If you’re looking for a calm and relaxing activity to enjoy, consider wildlife viewing. Grab a pair of binoculars and a book about birds to have the best experience. You just might see rattlesnakes, Gila monsters, coyotes, bighorn sheep, and even a desert bird.

Remember to avoid approaching animals in their natural habitat and even though it’s tempting, do not give them any human food or water.

Hunting

Hunting is a popular activity in Arizona. The state is best known for the large game that is available to hunt. There are a total of 10 species that you can hunt. This includes black bears, bison, elk, javelina, mountain lions, and antelope. There are also smaller animals like Merriam turkeys, Gould’s turkeys, and white-tailed deer. While hunting is a fun activity, there are couple of things to keep in mind. Clean up ammo shells and be sure to have the proper licensing.

Picnicking

Picnicking is a low energy activity that the whole family can enjoy. Whether you’re fueling up for a long day of hiking the local trails or you just want a quick bite before an afternoon nap, picnicking is a popular off-season activity. It is crucial that you clean up all of your garbage and scraps of food. There are several bears in the area and doing this will keep them far away from the campground.
