Price Canyon Recreation Area is a Bureau of Land Management property situated in Price, Utah. A region that enjoys moderate climates year-round, this beautiful park and camping facility is surrounded by rich tree cover, providing ample shade.

The park and campground sit on a ledge above the canyon itself. An area that is renowned for its abundance of hiking trails, one of the most popular routes is lined by a thick outgrowth of beautiful bristlecone pine trees.

Travel to the Price Canyon Recreation Area is accessed by car. There are several campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis directly on the premises with multiple area campgrounds also offering accommodations for both RV and tent campers.

Driving

Situated just 12 miles outside of the town of Price, Utah, Price Canyon Recreation Area is easily accessed by vehicle directly from Highway 60/6 North. This stretch of road is a paved highway of two-lane construction. It proceeds through terrain that is mostly flat, but the route can be winding in spots.

The park and camping facility is well-marked by a large entrance sign. The road leading to the park is paved and travels up a hill with a sharp incline. Parking can be found at a provided lot at the entrance to Price Canyon Recreation Area. The overlook, campground, and park can all be accessed from this one main lot.

Parking

There is a provided parking lot at the entrance to Price Canyon Recreation Area. The lot is paved and can accommodate both cars and RVs. However, RVs should be limited to a maximum of 35 feet in total.

Public Transportation

There is currently no public transportation available to Price Canyon Recreation Area.

Reservations camping

Avintaquin Campground

Found within nearby Ashley National Forest, Avintaquin Campground offers RV and tent camping for families to enjoy year-round. Reservations are required for accommodations at this popular camping facility.

The campground rests in a thick grouping of Douglas fir trees at an extremely high elevation. The property is frequented by many species of wildlife including elk and mule deer.

Access to the property is secured through the Reservation Ridge Scenic Backway. This road is comprised of dirt and is best suited to off-road vehicles.

There is only one large site available on the premises; however, there are several others that are suited for family camping. Each of the campsites is furnished with a picnic table, a fire pit, and a barbecue. There is plenty of parking found on the grounds.
There are pit toilets on the premises for the public to use. However, no drinking water is provided.

Scofield State Park Mountain View Campground

Scofield State Park Mountain View Campground offers RV and tent camping for families to enjoy year-round. Reservations are required.

Nestled within the popular Scofield State Park, the property rests at an elevation of 7,600 feet in total. There is a lake on the grounds that is the perfect spot for doing some boating or fishing. The summer months see the property used for such sports as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

This camping facility has 34 campsites available for RV or tent camping. Among the amenities provided on the premises are showers, bathrooms, a fish cleaning station, a waste disposal station, and a boat launch.

Pets may join their families but must remain leashed.

First-come first-served

Price Campground

Price Campground is found on the same premises as Price Canyon Recreation Area. The property offers 18 campsites for year-round camping on a first-come, first-served basis. Each of the campsites is quite spacious and is complete with a picnic table and fire pit.

There are few on-site amenities at this recreational area which favors primitive-style camping conditions for both RV and tent campers to enjoy. Found on the grounds are vault toilets for the public to use.

35 feet is the maximum size RV or trailer permitted on the grounds.

Also situated on the grounds are three picnic sections which are well-suited to groups.

Pets are permitted on the grounds but must remain leashed at all times. Though no power hookups are available here, there is ample drinking water provided.

Seasonal activities in Price Canyon Recreation Area

In-Season

Price Canyon Trail

Families who enjoy hiking will delight at the trails they will discover at Price Canyon Recreation Area. One of the most popular routes is the Price Canyon Trail. This hiking path travels from the mouth of Price Canyon Road to the middle of a stunning mountain known as Sentinel Peak.

The terrain is rugged and steep in places, making it a challenging hike. Approximately one mile into the hike is Price Spring, a spot that is easily identified by its dam and thick cropping of immensely tall trees. Further along this route, hikers will enjoy the sights found within the Chiricahua Wilderness.

There are two trailheads that hikers can follow to extend their journey should they so choose.

Utah State University Eastern Prehistoric Museum

A visit to Utah State University Eastern Prehistoric Museum is fun for the whole family. This popular destination houses many different exhibits of great archaeological and geological significance to the region.

Each of the items housed within the museum was found on the premises. Among the fossil remains found on-site include many different types of dinosaurs.

However, Utah State University Eastern Dinosaur Museum is more than just a space dedicated to the study of ancient dinosaur remains. The property also bears the distinction of being one of the few accredited museums within the state.

Among the places families can visit during a trip to this popular museum are the Hall of Dinosaurs, the Hall of Archaeology, the Discovery Area, and the Museum Store.

Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry

Another interesting place to stop by during a visit to Price Canyon Recreation Area is the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry. Found with the Jurassic National Monument, the quarry is home to the largest grouping of dinosaur remains dating back to the Jurassic period. It is believed that the bones found on the premises represent 74 different dinosaurs in total.

The property remains an important site for scientific discovery. Though much has been learned about the creatures which once roamed the land, there is still a lot that remains unknown. Paleontologists assert that the up to three-quarters of the bones found on site belonged to meat-eating creatures. Since such a large concentration of bones was excavated in the region, researchers are still perplexed as to how many animals once dwelled there.

Off-Season

The Wedge

For incredible scenery, it's hard to beat the views glimpsed from the Wedge. The Wedge Overlook offers breathtaking panoramas of the San Rafael River and its trajectory through the region known as the Little Grand Canyon.

The Wedge takes its name from its dome-shaped appearance which was formed as a result of localized erosion. The property is home to several amenities including bathrooms.

There are many outdoor activities that can be enjoyed here including camping (in specified regions), hiking, and mountain biking.

As an area that is quite remote, it is recommended that all visitors carry drinking water, food, and extra gas for their vehicle with them on this trip. Good hiking shoes are also a must-have item.

Basso Dino Mine Park

Basso Dino Mine Park is a popular recreational area for families visiting Price Canyon Recreation Area. The park pays homage to the area's history as a once prosperous mining town.

Access to the play area can be attained through a simulated mine shaft or via the head of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The T-Rex is both a slide and a climbing structure for children to enjoy. Other fun activities at this recreational area include picnicking, swings, walking paths, and a mock dinosaur excavation site for kids to enjoy.

The park was established in 2006 and is near to basketball courts, playgrounds, pavilions, picnic tables, a skate park, and much more.

Coal Miner's Memorial

The Coal Miner's Memorial is a sentimental place to visit during a trip to Price Canyon Recreation Area. The memorial was erected on September 7th, 2015 and pays tribute to the 1350 miners whose lives were tragically cut short in the Carbon County region mines.

There are several concrete benches on the grounds where families can sit and enjoy a picnic lunch or reflect on what life was like for the men working in the mines during their hay day.

The property is surrounded by short walking paths and lots of tree cover, making it a nice place for a leisurely stroll to enjoy some reflection and relaxation.
