Introduction

Sited west of Ouachita National Forest, Wister Lake is a US Army Corps of Engineers park that allows campers and visitors to enjoy memorable camping experiences and fun activities. Located just two miles east of Wister, along US Highway 270 in Oklahoma, this lake park can be easily accessed by RVs, trailers, and other motorized vehicles.
There are plenty of ways to stay active at Wister Lake. You could choose to explore the park’s waters by boating, sailing, rafting, or fishing for channel catfish, northern bluegill, flathead catfish, and bass. Alternatively, you can hunt for a variety of game such as mourning dove, bobwhite quail, cottontail rabbit, squirrel, and turkey. Swimming is yet another pleasurable activity in the park’s waters. Bird watching, nature and wildlife photography, and picnicking are some other popular things to do at this COE park. There are also some nearby attractions and places with services and supplies.
Tent and RV camps are available at Wister Lake for vacationers and visitors. Campgrounds offer full and partial hookup options for RVs, as well as amenities such as a playground, boat ramps, dump stations, potable water, and showers.

Transportation

Driving

Located two miles east of Wister along US Highway 270, Wister Lake COE park is easy to drive to and access by RV, trailers and other motorized vehicles. A number of local roads also connect the park’s areas. There are no driving restrictions within the park. RVs and trailers can be rented at the nearby Ouachita National Forest by visitors or campers without motorhomes.

Parking

Parking spaces are available for vacationers and visitors at and around Wister Lake to park RVs, trailers, and cars. Campgrounds and recreation areas also have parking pads for vehicles. Moreover, overnight parking is also available.

There are no direct public transportation services to Wister Lake.

Reservations camping

Victor Landing Campground

Victor Landing Campground is a 57-campsite campground on the shore of Wister Lake, available by reservation and open all year. The campsite accommodates tents and RVs and features amenities such as picnic tables, grills, toilets, potable water, and showers. Other facilities available in the campground include a playground, boat ramp, and dump station. Recreational activities that campers will enjoy at this campground include fishing, hiking, and boating.
Campsites in this campground offer full and partial hookups for RVs and trailers. Some pads are paved, while others are gravel. Although there are a few trees dotted about, privacy isn't great, so staying in an RV is a good way to enjoy this park. The RV length limit is 50 feet, and pets are allowed.

Quarry Island Campground

Quarry Island Campground is a pet-friendly 10-campsite campground on the shore of Wister Lake, available by reservation and open all year. The campsite accommodates tents and RVs and features amenities such as picnic tables, grills, toilets, potable water, and showers. Other facilities available in the campground include a boat ramp and dump station. Recreational activities that campers will enjoy at this campground include fishing, hiking, and boating.

Campsites in this campground offer electric hookups for RVs and trailers. The RV length limit is 40 feet. All in all, it makes for a good place to stay when you're looking to explore this corner of Oklahoma.

Seasonal activities in Wister Lake

In-Season

Boating

Come to Wister Lake with your boat attached to your RVs and trailers to be part of the exciting boating experience that the park offers to all who choose to explore its waters. The pleasure boating in the park is also accompanied by canoeing and rafting activities. COE regulations and Oklahoma boating laws govern the use of boats in this park and you will be required to operate your boat(s) and vessels in a safe and controlled manner. Underwater hazards are present in the lake.

Fishing

There are excellent opportunities for anglers who visit Wister Lake on vacation to enjoy some of the finest fishing on offer within Oklahoma. Thanks to the abundance of channel catfish, northern bluegill, flathead catfish, and sand bass, this lake is an attractive spot for fishermen from within and outside the region.
Largemouth and smallmouth bass are also present with the park’s waters. So are perch species which contribute to the sport fish in the lake. So, come along with your fishing gear and tackle for a pleasurable angling experience.

Swimming

Although there are no designated swimming areas with lifeguards present at Wister Lake, swimming is not prohibited at the park. All who wish to enjoy the water are only required to practice safe swimming and stay close to the shore. There are good spots on the lakeshore in the park to sit and enjoy a meal or take in the sun before or after swimming in the water. So, you can enjoy picnicking and swimming by the lake. Children should be supervised, and pets should not be brought to the shoreline area.

Off-Season

Hunting

With over 52 square miles of project lands made available to the public for hunting purposes, hunters find plenty of chances to go after game at Wister Lake. The public hunting area is licensed to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation for the purpose of wildlife management and three square miles are dedicated as a state waterfowl refuge. The rest of the hunting area features white-tailed deer and upland game hunting. Mourning dove, bobwhite quail, cottontail rabbit, squirrel, and turkey are commonly hunted game in the park.

Ouachita National Forest

Located in parts of Arkansas and Oklahoma, Ouachita National Forest is a wonderful place to visit while camping at Wister Lake. There you’ll enjoy the view of outstanding mountains, picturesque water bodies, and beautiful landscapes. What’s more, there are opportunities for recreational activities such as hunting, scenic driving, fishing, and many more. Nature lovers will definitely have a swell time at the forest with its unique flora and fauna species. Off-highway vehicles and mountain biking are some other sports that bring riders to the forest.

Lake Wister State Park

Wildlife watchers, nature lovers and photographers, and outdoor recreation enthusiasts that visit Wister Lake COE should take a short trip to Lake Wister State Park for more opportunities to have their minds blown. At this park, there are modern camping and recreation facilities as well as a miniature golf course for vacationers to challenge their family and friends to exciting rounds. Fishing, hiking, bird viewing, picnicking, and swimming are other activities that visitors can participate in.
