Oklahoma has just two major population centers, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. The rest of the state’s residents live in the suburbs of these two cities in mostly rural communities. Both are in the eastern third of the state and just a 90-minute drive from each other on Interstate 44. As such, it’s not very hard to see most of what Oklahoma has to offer when you rent an RV there. Oklahoma City is a great starting point for any road trip in the Sooner State; it’s the capital and its largest city. There are several excellent museums in the metropolitan area, including the National Cowboy Western Heritage Museum, the Oklahoma Science Museum, and Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. Given the city’s association with the 1995 federal building, this last one is of particular significance. Oklahoma City also has a fantastic arts scene, with the Oklahoma City Museum of Art housing a fantastic collection of pieces from around the world while also showing art house films in its auditorium. When you choose an RV rental in Western Oklahoma, one of the best campgrounds around is the Oklahoma City East KOA. Campsites include full hookups, space for a 90-foot-long RV rental, and free WiFi. There’s also a dog park, making this one of the more pet-friendly RV parks in Oklahoma. To relax at the end of the day, you can lounge in the campground pool while munching on a tasty treat from the nearby snack bar. Just north of Oklahoma City is the state’s second-largest metropolitan area, Tulsa. While smaller in size, it’s never short on attractions. The Philbrook Museum of Art has an excellent variety of works, from Native American pottery to medieval paintings. If you’re a folk music fan, check out the Woody Guthrie Center, where the famed singer’s notebooks, photographs, and songwriting materials are on display. There’s even a virtual reality experience where you can get a feel for what it was like to live in Dust Bowl-era Oklahoma when Guthrie was just starting his career. Those looking for a great Oklahoma RV campground will love the Tulsa NE/Will Rodgers Downs KOA. It’s close to Will Rodgers Downs horse racing track, which has races throughout the summer and fall, and simulcast viewings throughout the year. The sites there have large pull-through spaces with full hookups, a dog park, horseshoe pits, and a playground for the little ones. Stray very far from either of the above cities, and you’re in for a real Oklahoma adventure. Outdoor enthusiasts should check out the southwestern corner, known as Great Plains Country, where the Quartz Mountains are located. Clinton is considered the hub of activity in this region and one of the best towns to check out when camping in southwestern Oklahoma. One of the popular places to visit in Clinton is the Route 66 Museum, which is filled with classic cars, signage, and all sorts of memorabilia to get you thinking about where to go on your next road trip. While there are tons of great places to camp in this part of the state, when you rent an RV near Clinton, consider camping at Elk City/Clinton KOA. The campground has a swimming pool, a snack bar, and a dog park. It’s about halfway between Elk City and Clinton on Interstate 40 and near to all the attractions on Route 66. Even more outdoor fun can be found in the hilly region of southeastern Oklahoma. This part of the state is more similar to the Appalachians of neighboring Arkansas than the windy plains to the west. Known regionally as Choctaw Country, the southeast is blanketed in dense forests that are a hiker’s paradise. One of the largest towns in the region is Durant, which serves as a great basecamp for Choctaw Country. Referred to as the Magnolia Capital of the World for its abundance of trees, it's rich in Native American history, which can be seen at the Three Valley Museum. Durant is also home to the Choctaw Casino Resort, one of the largest gaming institutions in the area. Those wanting to camp in the Durant area can head to Durant/Choctaw Casino KOA. It’s just outside the casino and event center and offers full hookups, spacious sites (80 feet long), a swimming pool, a dog park, a putting green, a playground, and a gym. The nearby casino has an excellent restaurant if you’re hungry and don’t want to drive into town. Oklahoma’s rich history and vibrant cities make for a fantastic vacation. Even if you just take a road trip from Oklahoma City to Tulsa, you can experience a lot. But if you have the time and the curiosity, there’s more to see in its western half, where few other tourists venture.
