Visitors will discover many local attractions they can visit while in the area. An hour away in the state’s capital city Atlanta is Centennial Olympic Park. This attraction was where the 1996 Summer Olympics were held before later being converted into a public park. Covering over 22 acres, Centennial Olympic Park has many interesting highlights, including gardens, the Quilt Plazas, amphitheaters, and guided tours. There is also a large Ferris wheel close by that offers panoramic views of the area. During the year, the park hosts a variety of events, such as a vibrant fireworks display for the Fourth of July and a spectacular Christmas light show.
In Macon, there’s the Johnston-Felton-Hay House. This historic structure was built in 1855 and is known for its Italian Renaissance Revival architecture. Numerous owners lived in the house, and each added their own unique mark to it. Today, the house has been converted into a museum, and visitors can explore its interior where they’ll be able to view chandeliers, paintings, and antique furniture. Visitors can also sign up for a behind-the-scenes tour where they’ll be able to access areas that are normally off-limits.
While in Macon, stop by the Tubman Museum. This museum is designed to tell more about African American history, culture, and art. While here, you’ll find a variety of interesting exhibits on display, such as murals, devices created by prominent African American inventors, and folk art pieces. The museum also puts on numerous events throughout the year, such as jazz celebrations and the Pan African Festival. Tickets are required although a few discounts are available.
Head over to Augusta to check out the Augusta Riverwalk. The riverwalk overlooks the Savannah River and spans many city blocks. While strolling down it, you’ll come across many interesting attractions, including museums, restaurants, shops, and farmer’s markets. The Augusta Riverwalk also features beautiful views of the surrounding landscape, and a few areas are bordered by towering ancient trees.
There are a few gas stations situated near Indian Springs State Park, with the closest being less than five minutes away. You’ll also discover a handful of restaurants close by, although if you’re looking for more unique options, you’ll need to venture over to a larger city. Some local snacks and dishes to enjoy while here are peaches, fried chicken, and pecan pie.
