Given that Bismarck lies next to the Missouri river, there’s a couple ways to enjoy the river while visiting here with your rental RV. Keelboat Park is an excellent outdoor learning venture. The self-guided walking tour along the river and takes you through the history of the area especially as it pertains to Lewis and Clark’s famed trek. The park includes a full-scale replica of the keelboat the two adventurers would have used at the time. Nearby “sibling” parks Chief Looking’s Village and Pioneer Park are adjacent to one another. Both offer interactive self-guided tours focused on the area’s original inhabitants. Visitors are also able to use the mountain biking trail, walking paths, playground, and sand volleyball court. Bismarck’s popular McDowell Dam Recreation Area is great for a sunny day. The park allows swimming in the McDowell Dam and has a public beach to encourage it. To further entice the water, you’re able to rent a variety of boats and water sport vessels right on site. Once your skin is waterlogged, play some horseshoe or take a walk along the nature trails. There are larger state parks available outside Bismarck for the true rugged folks. Cross Ranch State Park runs around undeveloped bits of the Missouri River in Oliver County. The woodland so untouched, its claim to visit here is to travel back to a time when Native American tribes were plentiful hundreds of years ago. Here, you’ll find 13 miles of hiking trails and ample fishing opportunities. A tad closer to Bismarck, you’ll find Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in Mandan. This is the oldest state park in North Dakota and offers a unique combination of history, culture, and nature. Both the Missouri and Heart Rivers flow through creating great fishing. Set out on the trails to discover beautiful views of the river from overhead.
