Rent an RV in North Dakota and drive west to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is positioned where the Great Plains meet the Badlands. It sprawls across over 70,000 acres divided into three areas linked by the Little Missouri River and is named for the 26th president of the United States. It’s a popular destination for backcountry hiking, with more than 100 miles to explore and has regular sightings of bison, wild horses, white-tailed deer, and bighorn sheep. Highlights of the park include the colorful Painted Canyon within the South Unit and Maltese Cross Cabin, where Roosevelt lived during his ranching days. There are two RV campgrounds in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, both of which only have primitive (no hookups) sites. If you travel east from the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, you’ll arrive at the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, which was established in 1907 as the first state park in North Dakota. It’s home to a replica Mandan On-A-Slant Indian Village and several reconstructed military buildings that include Custer House, where living history tours are regularly conducted. Stop in at the museum, which details Mandan culture, the history of Fort Abraham Lincoln, and the establishment of the park, then grab a coffee in the reconstructed commissary storehouse. If you want to stretch your legs, there’s an extensive trail system to explore, with many climbing into the hills for breathtaking views of the river valley below. There are 82 modern campsites within the park offering water and electric connections, plus some primitive campsites with no hookups. In the far northeast region of North Dakota is the Icelandic State Park, which encompasses 912 acres along the shores of Lake Renwick. Aside from offering a variety of recreational opportunities that include boating, swimming, and fishing, it provides visitors with a setting to delve into the region’s homesteading history. Wander amidst the restored buildings that include the Akra Community Hall and Hallson Church, then explore the Pioneer Heritage Center. Its exhibits highlight North Dakota’s early settlement. Also within the park is Gunlogson Nature Preserve, a 200-acre wooded area along the Tongue River that provides a sanctuary for dozens of rare plant and animal species. When it’s time to park for the night, you can stay at one of the water/electric campsites within the park.
