At the time of the accident, the Royal Air Force (RAF) Fauld was an underground storage depot for explosive devices. The explosion left behind a large crater measuring 100 feet deep and 250 yards wide. While the exact death toll remains unknown, at least 70 people lost their lives. The blast also leveled a factory in a neighboring town and destroyed a reservoir nearby. Hundreds of bombs are still buried underneath the crater, so visitors should keep a safe distance. Spend some time walking around the crater, which is now a lush space full of vegetation. A stone memorial inside the crater commemorates those who lost their lives that day. There's also an information board near the parking area with the history of the RAF Fauld site.
