Rickwood Caverns is a park located in Blount County, Alabama, just a few miles north of the town of Warrior. The park is centered around caverns that were discovered by two Boy Scouts troop leaders. The leaders, Rickles and Arwood, discovered the caves in the early 1950s while they were exploring the area. They combined their names to achieve the name of the caverns. Originally, the caverns were run as a private business. Now, they are part of a publicly-funded park.

Central Alabama has a humid, subtropical climate. The winters are mild, and the summers are very hot. Snowfall is common each winter, but it is typically light snowfall that doesn’t stick to the ground for very long. Blount County and surrounding areas are near Ruffner Mountain, Mount Cheaha, and Red Mountain. As such, an RV rental near Rickwood Caverns will mean some driving through the hills.

From Rickwood Caverns, outdoors lovers can reach Birmingham in less than thirty minutes. Tuscaloosa is about 90 minutes away, and Huntsville is about an hour away. These major Alabama cities provide several interesting places to drive an RV rental. Many nearby towns also have interesting attractions.

Discover Rickwood Caverns

Getting Outdoors

Rickwood Caverns is focused on the caverns at the park. The cavern tour is a major attraction for outdoor enthusiasts who book an RV in Blount County. “The Miracle Mile” is another particularly popular attraction. The tour explores a mile of connected underground caverns. Visitors to the park can view stalactites, stalagmites, and other natural rock formations. Some of the limestone formations are dated to be 260 million years old.

Natural water formations in the cave are home to blind cavefish. These are a major draw for many tourists as well. Since the caves were formed by running water, many fossils of ancient water life are also plainly visible.

In addition to the caverns, Rickwood Caverns offers an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The park also has multiple picnic shelters, open-air picnic areas, and a gift shop. Outdoors enthusiasts who want to stretch their legs can hike along the trails or take their kids to the playground. Geocaching is also a popular activity for many hikers.

Camping at Rickwood Caverns

Rickwood Caverns has 13 campsites. Nine of the sites are landscaped, and the others are undeveloped. The sites offer 30-amp electric and water hookups. Big rigs can fit at some of the sites, but there are no pull-through sites. Since the park is close to Birmingham and other sizable towns, cell phone service tends to be pretty reliable.

Many of the landscaped campsites are gravel, but some of the undeveloped ones are dirt. Each landscaped parking site tends to be fairly level, but some are slightly sloped. Outdoors lovers who rent an RV near Rickwood Caverns will also find fire rings and picnic tables at most of the sites.
