Getting Outdoors

Fringed by golden sand and shallow water, Lake Martin is a fantastic place to cool off in the warm summer months. The beach area offers plenty of family-friendly facilities, including picnic tables, volleyball nets, and a bathhouse. Bring your own picnic or pick up pizza, sandwiches, and artisan ice cream at the popular Creem at the Creek restaurant. You can also rent paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes for a leisurely paddle on the lake.

Well-stocked with freshwater species, Wind Creek is a paradise for anglers. Pick up bait and tackle at the Marina Store, then cast a line off the 210-foot fishing pier for the chance to reel in bluegill, crappie, striped bass, and more. If you want to stretch your legs, the park offers a pair of hiking trails that wind through the pine forests and down the shoreline. Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer grazing in the forest.

Kids and adults alike love teeing off at the Wind Creek State Park Putt-Putt Golf Course, while thrillseekers will jump at the chance to fly through the forest canopy at the Wind Creek Ziplines and Aerial Adventure Park. Alternatively, string up a bow and arrow and test your skills at the archery range.

Camping at Wind Creek State Park

Wind Creek boasts one of the largest state-managed campgrounds in the country, with more than 620 sites spread across 320 acres. Around 160 sites are set on the water's edge and treat campers to gorgeous views of the lake – sink into a fold-out deck chair or make a splash with swimming, fishing, and boating at your doorstep. Other sites are shaded by tall pines and surrounded by colorful wildflowers and dogwoods.

More than 200 of the sites are full-service with water, electricity, and sewer hookups. All sites feature picnic tables and grills – perfect for fish fry ups and s'more roasting sessions. Wind Creek treats you to a premium state park RV camping experience, with creature comforts such as hot showers, flush toilets, and laundry facilities. There's a well-stocked campground store for picking up firewood and other basics, as well as a marina, fishing pier, and playground. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to arrive early if you're planning on camping with an RV during peak season, which spans from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Exploring the Area

From world-class golf courses to scenic hiking trails, Tallapoosa County is a rewarding destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Golfers can tee off at Lakewinds, an 18-hole public course with rounded greens and postcard-perfect valley views. In summer, it's hard to resist the call of the Lake Martin Amphitheater. A multipurpose outdoor venue, the stage hosts everything from jazz concerts to Fourth of July fireworks shows. Bring a picnic blanket, lawn chair, and bottle of wine and enjoy state-of-the-art entertainment coupled with panoramic views of Lake Martin.

For insight into the local history of the region, pay a visit to the Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, which is dedicated to the legacy of the American soldiers and Creek Nation, who clashed in 1814. Soak up more history at Russell Crossroads, a historic town with cobblestone streets and old-fashioned charm. Learn about the town's 19th-century heritage at the Discovery Center, stock up on farm-fresh produce at the market, or saddle up for a horseback ride at The Stables. On weekends, the Town Green hosts star-spangled outdoor concerts.

Alexander City is the closest urban hub, with a good selection of gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants. You can also tick off quirky attractions like the Wellborn MuscleCar Museum and Southern Star Farm. A favorite with families, this attraction gets you up close with ponies, alpacas, and other cuddly farm animals. Birmingham, an hour and a half northwest, is also a great place to pick up RV rentals near Wind Creek State Park.
