The lake is a beautiful, natural, freshwater lake surrounded by the Chugach Mountains. Depending on the season, there is a great deal to do at the lake and the surrounding area, from swimming and water skiing in summer to ice skating in the winter. Most of the lake is surrounded by private property and homes, but there are still public access points that allow those that rent an RV in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough to have access to the water.

Getting Outdoors

One of the most popular recreational activities for those that go camping at Cottonwood Lake to enjoy is canoeing due to the fact that there is so much to explore. Cottonwood is connected to both Finger Lake and Wasilla Lake by small portages meaning that it is part of a canoe trail that stretches 7 miles and is a great way to see the beauty of the landscape by the water. Other types of boating are also abundant, but the whole lake is a no-wake zone, so you’ll just have to be sure not to go too fast. Access to the lake is via a primate boat ramp on the western shore.

Camping at Cottonwood Lake

There are various campgrounds very near the shores of Cottonwood Lake. One of the most popular is Alaska Big Bear RV Park, which has a total of 47 RV sites as well as a few cabins and tent sites. There are plenty of facilities such as showers, Wi-Fi, a dump station, as well as 50/30 electric service. There are plenty of different site options depending on your needs, from 35’ to 70’ long, with both pull-thru and back-ins, all of which have a fire ring and picnic table. For entertainment, there is a centrally located playground and horseshoe pits.

Very near Cottonwood Lake is the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry, an attraction that will provide a fascinating insight into travel in the state of Alaska. Learn about the development of railroads, roads, aircraft, and river steamboats, and view the many transportation and industrial remnants that live in the museum, telling the story of the machines and people that turned Alaska into the place that it is today.
