Although Lake Louise was discovered many centuries ago, it did not become a popular recreational lake until the mid 20th century. The main reason for this was that the lake was once only accessible by seaplane. In the 1940s, however, the army began to build a series of highways through Alaska, one of which led right up to the waters of Lake Louise.
