Nestled in the serene Ouachita Mountain region, between the towns of Hot Springs and Malvern, is Lake Catherine State Park. The park protects more than 2,000 acres of pinewoods, wildflowers, lovely creeks, waterfalls, and lakeshore. Those who pay attention to their surroundings will likely spot multiple marine bird species, forest critters, and even some of the bigger animals like white-tailed deer.
The park’s natural beauty, trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds make it an ideal location for RV camping, family picnics, fishing, boating, and hiking. The town of Hot Springs and other area attractions are just a few miles away, so those exploring this area in a rental motorhome will have plenty of ways to occupy their time.
For an unforgettable state park camping experience, make sure you get a quality RV rental in one of the nearby towns. You can search for an RV in Hot Spring County to ensure your starting point is near the lake. Some of the cities in the neighboring county are also good places to rent an RV. You can browse the rentals available in Little Rock, located an hour away from the park, or Benton, just 30 miles northeast of the park.
During your Lake Catherine State Park camping trip, you'll likely spend most of your time at the lake or on the park’s trails. Lake Catherine is a wonderful place to sunbathe, unwind, swim, waterski, fish, or just cruise for hours. The park has a boat ramp on the lake, and you also have a place to rent non-motorized boats. Of course, you can bring your own motorized boat if you have one and cruise across the lake, find an ideal fishing spot, or waterski. Anglers will love it here as the lake offers an array of fish species. With the right gear and a little patience, you can catch catfish, crappie, trout, walleye, bream, and bass.
If you'd rather stay on land, hit the trails on foot or horseback. Slunger Creek Trail is the easiest pathway to traverse, so if you're looking for a lovely and relaxing walk with amazing opportunities for quality photographs, you should opt for this one. Other trails are a bit more difficult to conquer, but they also provide scenic shots for wildlife and nature photographers.
Falls Branch Trail will lead you through Little Canyon Creek all the way to the beautiful waterfalls. Dam Mountain and Horseshoe Mountain trails will have you go through hardwood forests, wildflower fields, and geologically diverse landscapes. If you want to learn more about the park, you can join one of the park's tours, where a guide will tell you more about the area's nature and wildlife.
As far as RV camping goes, Lake Catherine State Park has Class B and Class AAA campsites for RVs. Class B sites offer 30-amp electrical and water hookups, whereas Class AAA campsites have 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups. Sites accommodate rigs up to 60 feet long, which gives you some flexibility when searching for an RV rental near Lake Catherine State Park. The campground features restrooms, picnic tables, fire rings, hot showers, and a dump station.
Alternatively, you can rent a tent or fully set-up camping spots that feature grills, stoves, lanterns, and even electrical hookups. If you need supplies or snacks, you can find them in the park’s visitors' center.
Once you're ready to find a restaurant near the park, make the drive to the town of Hot Springs, where there's basically a restaurant on every corner. You'll find lots of bar-and-grills, Mexican restaurants, sushi places, and fast food joints here, so there’s no way you’ll be leaving with an empty stomach. You'll also find multiple gas stations in town, which will come in handy in case your tank needs a refill.
Hot Springs also has a very fun museum that features statues and props of the most iconic superheroes and villains. The Galaxy Connection is an awesome place to visit if you're on a vacation with kids, and you can even book some of these characters to show up at a party. Have fun playing with props, learning about famous comic book heroes, and taking awesome pictures with Superman, Batman, Master Yoda, Darth Vader, and more.
Another fun place to visit while you're in the area is the National Park Aquarium. Here, you'll see some of the most bizarre and beautiful underwater dwellers, as well as amphibians and reptiles that can be seen on the coast. There are 60 exhibits that feature more than 80 marine animal species. You'll learn new things, probably see some fish species for the first time, and possibly get inspiration for your own home aquarium.
For guests who love rare plants and gardens, check out Garvan Gardens on the very outskirts of the town. You'll find majestic botanical landscapes that will take your breath away. The place is really big, so you might want to take a whole day just to visit all of the different gardens here. Guests can attend lectures, book special events, and donate funds to support the cause.
