Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum

attraction North Little Rock, AR
If you are interested in maritime history from the Second World War onwards, the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum is well worth a visit. It features the submarine, the USS Razorback, which will open your eyes to the life the marines had to endure. There are cramped quarters, the smell of diesel, and a lack of showers and laundry facilities. However, there were excellent chefs on board, so at least the men had delicious food. The submarine was commisioned on the 3rd April 1944. Following the Second World War, the submarine was used during both the Cold War and the Vietnam War. In 1970, it was commissioned to the Turkish navy, who gave it back to the US in 2004. It has been part of this museum since then, and is complete and unmodified. You will have a tour with a very experienced guide, who will take you back in time. Also on display is the USS Hoga, the last surviving vessel from the attack on Pearl Harbor. There is a small museum in a barge next to the submarine, which has some interesting artifacts. There is also a very nice gift shop. If you have a child who wants to do something different for his or her birthday, sleepover parties on the submarine can be arranged.
