The famous Cucamonga Wilderness of California sits atop Los Angeles and has provided relief for city-dwellers for over a century. Its vast grounds encompass parts of the Angeles National Forest to the west and San Bernardino National Forest to the east. All-in-all, it offers visitors more than 13,000 acres of fantastic forest, exciting wildlife, and quaint streams to discover on foot!

Due to the increased popularity of the grounds, and the strain on the natural environment, all visitors are now required to have a permit to visit Cucamonga Wilderness. Permits are free to purchase; they are simply used as a way to monitor the number of visitors in the park and prevent groups larger than 25 people entering the grounds.

Anyone with RV rentals in Los Angeles County will have no problem accessing Cucamonga Wilderness via the suburb of Claremont and car park at Mount Baldy Village, where its possible to buy the permit. From here, visitors have access to miles upon miles of hiking trails and superb natural wilderness.

Discover Cucamonga Wilderness

Getting Outdoors

No Cucamonga Wilderness camping trip would be complete without a day or two spent hiking through the grounds, discovering hidden corners and remote camps. There are actually more than 30-miles of trails to choose from, ranging from easy to difficult. Arguably the most challenging hike in the park in the 12-mile round hike to the Cucamonga Peak. With an ascent of 4,200 feet in front of you, hikers will need to be of a high level of fitness, bring plenty of water, snacks and start out as early as possible. In the middle of this challenging seven-hour hike, walkers will reach the peak and be rewarded to panoramic views over the urban sprawl of LA, towering mountains, and the vast deserts behind them. If you’re considering camping at Cucamonga Wilderness during the winter, remember to wrap up warm as it’s not uncommon for there to be snow and ice on the track.

Efforts have been made in recent times to preserve and protect this vast wilderness to create a safe environment for the native flora and fauna to thrive. While walking through the sub-alpine forests of Ponderosa, Jeffrey and Douglas-fir, keep an eye out for larger mammals that call these forests their home too. Deer and bighorn sheep are some of the most common species to make an appearance, though bear and mountain lions are also known to live in the area. Before your hike, remember to brush up on safety tips when it comes to encountering potentially dangerous animals in California.

When winter comes, the Cucamonga Wilderness and its surrounding mountains are transformed into a winter wonderland. Motorhome camping here at this time is dominated by keen skiers, snowboarders, and snowshoers, hoping to find their next bit of powder to play on. There are plenty of spots to choose from, but one of the most popular has to be Mount Baldy, which, elevated 8,500 feet, has become the place to go for skiers.

Camping at Cucamonga Wilderness

There are more than enough primitive campgrounds scattered throughout the Cucamonga Wilderness, but if you’re looking for somewhere to park up your luxury RV rental, you’ll need to head out of the park. One of the most scenic campgrounds in the area is the Camp Williams Resort. Sat at the foothills of Mount Baldy and along the banks of the San Gabriel River, guests couldn’t wish for a more peaceful place to call home during their vacation. Along with being a treat for the eyes, campers have all of the conveniences they could wish for, including full hook-ups, modern restrooms, and an onsite dump station.

When you’re looking for something a little less remote, consider setting up camp at one of Claremont’s two RV-friendly campgrounds. Both Fairplex RV Park and Bonelli Bluffs RV Park are located towards the Frank G Bonelli Regional Park and provide simple amenities for a pleasant stay. The two campsites both offer full hook-ups, free WiFi, hot showers, and flushing toilets. What’s more, with a game hall, swimming pool and easy access to town, staying at one of these two sites will make sure the whole family is kept entertained.
