Black Hawk, Colorado, was initially established as a mining town in the 1800s. However, over the years, this small town in the Gregory Gulch has become a popular tourist destination thanks to its numerous casinos and close proximity to Golden Gate Canyon State Park. The town is also just an hour’s drive from Denver on I-70, providing the perfect balance between seclusion and accessibility. Plus, to get the most out of your trip to Black Hawk, you can easily rent an RV by owner in town or in nearby cities.
Black Hawk is just minutes away from Golden Gate Canyon State Park - a massive, 12,000-acre park in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Hikers can enjoy over 35 miles of trails that range from moderately challenging to quite difficult, including the scenic Mountain Lion Trail and the intense Black Bear Trail. Visitors can also fish, mountain bike, and ride horseback through designated areas of the park. Golden Gate Canyon is also a popular destination for rock climbers; however, the park does not officially maintain climbing areas, and climbers will need to hike through the backcountry to access climbing routes. Additionally, all visitors to the park should keep in mind that cell service in the park is limited, so anyone venturing beyond the visitor center should bring basic supplies like water, a first aid kit, and a printed trail map.
Red Rocks Park, Lookout Mountain Park, and Staunton State Park are also a short drive away from Black Hawk. Red Rocks Park in Morrison is a great destination for hikers and music lovers alike. You can hike through its gorgeous natural rock formations during the day and then experience live music in this natural amphitheater at night. Then, you can head to nearby Golden to visit Lookout Mountain, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Colorado Rockies and downtown Denver as well as the grave of Buffalo Bill. If you’re looking for more intense hiking and other recreational opportunities, head to Staunton State Park. This park offers miles of trails, a stocked fishing pond, and rock climbing faces throughout the park. When you book an RV in Black Hawk, you can easily enjoy all of the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
When you visit Black Hawk, you’ll easily be able to find an RV park around the city. One of the closest RV parks is the Denver West/Central City KOA, which offers a nice balance of natural beauty and amenities. RVers can enjoy full hookups, a hot tub, and wireless internet while taking in scenic mountain views and gorgeous starry skies. If you’d rather get a bit closer to nature with the Black Hawk rental RV, check out the numerous camping options available around Golden Gate Canyon State Park. In the park itself, you can camp at the Reverend’s Ridge Campground, which has 20, 30, and 50 amp hookups as well as some availability during winter months. The Columbine and Kelly Dahl campgrounds are also nearby, but they do not have any RV hookups.
There are also plenty of great options a bit farther from the city. If you want full hookups while camping in the middle of nature, check out the Peak to Peak RV Park in Nederland. RVers who want to be closer to I-70 can stay at the Cottonwood RV Campground in Idaho Springs, a picturesque campground with full hookups, cable, and WiFi. If you’d rather stay a bit closer to Denver with the Black Hawk rental motorhome, consider the Clear Creek RV Park. This creekside RV park sits between Black Hawk and Denver, and it has lots of amenities, including WiFi and laundry. When you book an RV rental in Black Hawk, you’ll definitely find a great place to park your RV.
Black Hawk is Colorado’s smallest city, but you’ll find that there’s plenty to do in this small town. If you’re up for trying your luck at blackjack or on the slot machines, you can head to one of the many casinos in Black Hawk - in fact, this tiny town has more casinos than Atlantic City. If gambling isn’t your forte, take a self-guided walking tour of this historic mining town, or head to the Hidee Gold Mine, where you can tour an 1800s-style gold mine and even pan for gold. However, while there’s plenty to do in Black Hawk, you’ll need to travel a bit for supplies. There are some stores in the city, but the nearest Walmart is a 30-minute drive away in Evergreen, which is a convenient stop on the way to Red Rocks or Lookout Mountain, and could be a decent place to park the Black Hawk rental camper for the night while you’re passing through.
