While camping in East Hampton, you’ll be close to dozens of lovely state parks and forests that showcase the natural beauty of a state often overlooked. Hurd State Park and Day Pond State Park are within a few miles of Nelson’s Family Campground. Hurd State Park is named for the family who once had a homestead in the area by the pond, dating back nearly 400 years. The pond is a wonderful place to go fishing, swimming, and boating, and hiking through the forest during autumn yields some delightful views of the fiery foliage. Day Pond State Park is similarly named for the Day family who once called it home, and some of its foundational stones and leftover structures can be seen on site. Day Pond is also a fabulous place to swim, kayak, canoe, or go fishing.Feel the need to see another great pond while you rent an RV near Nelson's Family Campground? Miller Pond State Park has a large pond at its center. Swimming here is a pleasure, but the pond has some of the state’s best fishing, teeming with bass, trout, and much more. Hiking around the water’s edge is wonderful when the sun is rising or setting, and there are plenty of spots to mountain bike or hunt depending on the season. One of the state’s most popular parks is not far from the Nelson’s Family Campground campsites, nestled alongside the mighty Connecticut River. Gillette Castle State Park contains the ruins of an old castle once owned by famed stage actor William Gillette before it was purchased by the state to create a riverfront recreation area. Appreciate the stunning views of the river and then stop at the visitor center, which covers the natural surroundings and the history of the castle ruins on-site.
You don't need to head to Hartford or New London to get a dose of city sightseeing while you're camping at Nelson’s Family Campground, but there's lots to do in both city centers. Middletown is a viable option when you don’t feel like straying too far from the campground, with interesting places to see like the Kidcity Children's Museum where young children can learn about the natural world or take part in fun activities. The Van Vleck Observatory at Wesleyan College is great for gaining insight into outer space. Professors explain complex concepts about the solar system and galaxy, breaking it down into easy-to-digest explanations.Hartford is much larger and offers an array of attractions. The Capitol Building is a massive domed structure that looks like an absolute work of art, with arches, columns, spires, and an enormous gold dome climbing towards the sky.The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is one of the oldest continually operating art museums in the country, open to the public with 75,000 square feet of exhibition space featuring countless masterpieces and priceless statues, paintings, and other installations from around the world. There is nothing quite like this art institution in the downtown area, but check out some of the other museums and sites while exploring central Connecticut on your next camping trip.
What type of RV should I choose?
Start by determining how many people are planning to travel with you. Going on a solo-journey? Choose a camper van or a teardrop trailer. Bringing the whole family along for the ride? Consider a spacious Class A or five-wheel.
You’ll also want to consider amenities. For example, if you’re planning to cook on the road, you’ll want a kitchenette. If your campground doesn’t have public restrooms, you’ll want to search RVs with bathrooms. Check out full descriptions of our models to help you decide here.
Do the RVs have bathrooms?
Yes. Class A’s, Class B’s, and Class C’s and five-Wheels typically have bathrooms. Depending on where you plan on camping, you’ll want to double-check the availability of restrooms if selecting a rig without a bathroom. Nervous about renting an RV with a bathroom? Owners can help show you how to clean the tank or will offer to do it for you for a fee.
How does check-in work?
Once an Owner approves your RV reservation, you can coordinate a time to pick up your rig or have it delivered to your doorstep or campsite. At that point, the owner will do a key exchange with you and walk you through the RV and answer any questions you might have.
