Set on 100 wooded acres between New London and the state capital, Hartford, Acorn Acres is a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Surrounded by state parks, lush forests, and quaint villages, southeastern Connecticut is an excellent place to explore with a campervan rental.

This fantastic camping resort has lots to offer, including tent camping spaces, full-service RV sites, and everything in between. Guests without a tent or RV can choose one of the cabins available for rent. Daily, weekly, monthly, and even seasonal rates are offered by the campground, with wintertime campsites remaining an option too.

This fun-filled RV park is filled to the brim with exceptional activities and features to keep campers occupied and engaged during their stay. Amenities to enjoy while camping at Acorn Acres include an in-ground pool, child-friendly activities, hayrides, arts and crafts, playgrounds, and ball fields. There are also tennis courts, a game room, a swimming pond, paddleboards, mini-golf, and tons of weekly cookouts and events. There is never a dull moment when you camp at Acorn Acres.

The Great Outdoors

State forests and parks are practically a dime a dozen in this particular part of the Nutmeg State, so heading out and finding a slice of outdoor paradise is part of the fun when you rent an RV near Bozrah. Hopemead State Park and Gardner Lake State Park are both found a few miles from the campground, on the shores of Gardner Lake. Hopemead State Park is mostly undeveloped, once the estate of a wealthy family before being donated to the state. The main house, lodge, and carriage house remain standing, among other small buildings. Hiking, swimming, boating, and fishing are commonly enjoyed at Gardner Lake, where Gardner Lake State Park is also located. Once a resort, this serene state park has fantastic swimming areas, sandy beaches, and hiking trails. Minnie Island State Park is also an option, although it is only reachable by boat.

There are dozens of other state parks within a half hour's drive, like Devil’s Hopyard State Park. This lovely piece of land is dotted with heavily wooded groves, old bridges, historic homes and landmarks, strange geological features, freshwater pools, and spring-fed waterfalls. Legendary ghost stories and tales abound at this apparently haunted state park, making it a paranormal destination too.

One of Connecticut’s most popular parks can be found to the south on the Long Island Sound, an offshoot of the Atlantic Ocean. Rocky Neck State Park features rocky coastline, sandy stretches of beach, wildlife habitats, wetlands, and a large campground. Go for a swim in the refreshing water, catch fish from the rocks, or take in the impressive night skies while visiting this beach park near East Lyme. A large pavilion, concession stands, and showers are found at Rocky Neck State Park, too, so a day at the beach can be comfortable and convenient.

City Sightseeing

Acorn Acres is near the small city of Colchester. When you're camping there, you're never far from city attractions, though some driving is necessary to reach them. While you're in the area, set aside some time to visit the gorgeous New London Ledge Light House in New London, one of the most unique lighthouses in the country. A boat trip is required to see this amazing feat of engineering up close, as it is on its own human-made island in the middle of the harbor. Volunteer-run tours showcase this amazing brick building, from its keeper’s quarters to the lofty light tower itself. There is even a gift shop at this marvelous historical treasure.

New London is also home to the United States Coast Guard Academy, and the United States Coast Guard Museum pays homage to this important wing of the military. Chosen for its turbulent and dangerous waters, the Long Island Sound has been used for Coast Guard training for decades. History buffs will enjoy seeing the various uniforms, artifacts, military maps, and vehicles in this archive of treasures.

Lyman Allyn Art Museum is a jaw-dropping experience, from its impressive Greek architecture to the classic pieces of art that line its corridors. With sculptures on its front lawn, and over 17,000 pieces of art from Africa, Asia, and the Americas, this fantastic institution is certainly a good place to check out when you rent an RV near Acorn Acres.
