Discover Belfort

The Great Outdoors

While exploring Belfort, make time to visit the Porte de Brisach, or the Brisach Gate. This gateway to the city was created by Vauban. A bridge crosses the Rue des Mobiles and leads to the majestic gates. The Sun King emblem is emblazoned on the gates along with Louis XIV’s motto of nec pluribus impar, which means "not unequal to many." The ornate gates were crafted in 1687 and used until 1703. Visitors can stroll along the walls leading to the gate and stop for photos with these architectural marvels.

Spend the day at Lac du Malsaucy, or Lake Malsaucy, where you can hike, bike, or swim. The 135-acre lake is a great draw for locals and tourists. Find a camper rental in Belfort and spend time exploring Lake Malsaucy. Bring your fishing gear and cast your line in hopes of catching your dinner. Lounge on the sandy beach soaking up the sun while watching the boats glide across the lake. Rent a canoe, rowboat, or paddleboard and head out on the water.

Make plans to explore the Ballon d’Alsace, a fantastic mountain just north of Belfort. If visiting in the winter, pack your skis and enjoy alpine or cross-country skiing. In the summer, lace up your hiking boots or bring your bike for a day of excellent hiking or biking on the mountain. Be sure to stop at some of the lookouts and catch glimpses of the valley below and parts of Belfort. A treetop rope bridge and zip lines offer endless thrills for the more adventurous hearts.

A swimming pool and a children’s playground are sure to keep guests occupied when not out exploring. Campsites are level and feature privacy hedges and electrical hookups. Clean restrooms and showers are among the many amenities guests can access here.

Plan on staying at Camping Les Rives de la Doller, located on the bank of River Doller. Rent a motorhome in Belfort and spend a few days relaxing along the river when not exploring the region. Sites come equipped with standard home comforts like electric hookups and well-kept bathhouses. Enjoy a game on the sports fields or take a dip in the on-site swimming pool. The campground is within walking distance to Masevaux’s public baths.

Spend a night or two at Camping de l’Ill in Mulhouse. Each campsite is spacious, and many have electric and water hookups. Clean, modern toilet blocks and shower facilities are centrally located. Food trucks park near the campground, and restaurants are within easy walking distance. Once you've set up camp, play some ping pong or make a splash in the pool.

Exploring the City

When planning a trip to Belfort, make sure you stop in and tour the Belfort Citadel, built in the 13th century. Comte de Suze added more defenses to the citadel in the 17th century, followed by Vauban, who added a second wall and a system of ditches and motes that kept the city from falling during a siege in 1815. Visitors can tour the Belfort Citadel, climb up to the lookouts and explore the subterranean passages below. During the summer, visitors can watch re-enactments of various battles throughout Belfort’s history.

Bring your camera and head over to the Lion of Bartholdi, perched on a ledge below the Belfort Citadel. The lion was carved in 1880 by Frederic Bartholdi as a way to memorialize the siege of Belfort that took place during the Franco-Prussian War. Bartholdi is the same sculptor who designed the Statue of Liberty. The Lion stands tall on his ledge and beckons visitors to learn more about Belfort’s history.

The Musee d’Historie et d’Archeologie, or Museum of the History of Belfort, is housed in the Belfort Citadel’s former barracks. The museum is divided into three spaces and covers thousands of years of Belfort history. One section holds all things Bartholdi, including small sculptures and models, sketches of the lion, and even some sketches and models of the Statue of Liberty. Another section of the museum has prehistoric artifacts through the Gallo-Roman and Carolingian eras. The last section of the museum is a gallery memorializing the history of Belfort’s military efforts.
