While in Cergy, you'll want to experience Axe Majeur. Major Axis, took 30 years to complete and is the vision of Dani Karavan, a contemporary sculptor. There are 12 points of interest or stations along the Axe Majeur. The sculpture is just less than two miles long and is laid out in a straight line. At each station, visitors will discover a different information panel describing the importance of that station, such as the Esplanade de Paris, where you can see parts of La Defense and Paris when you look to the southeast. The Axe Majeur begins at the Tour Belvedere with a tower that has a laser beam pointing out the route along the entire sculpture. Exploring the City

While in Cergy, be sure to explore the Musée Tavet-Delacour, or the Tavet-Delacour Museum. The museum is in the former home of Pontoise’s Grand Vicar. The house was commissioned at the end of the 15th century by the Archbishop of Rouen. Now, the art inside is mainly from the 20th century and features pieces by Legros, Jean Arp, and Matisse. Many of the historical exhibits are rumored to have been stolen from the Royal Saint-Denis Basilica during the Revolution and include a lock of hair from Philip II, teeth from Henry III and Henry IV, a portion of Louis IX’s skull, and one of Catherine de’Medici’s mummified legs.

Stop in for a tour of the Pontoise Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century. The cathedral was added on to during the 1400s and 1500s making it a mash-up of styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, and Romanesque. Visitors can admire the nave and apse built in the 1100s. The main doors date back to the 15th century. View the 17th-century pulpit, choir stalls, choir screen, and baptismal font.

No visit to Cergy is complete without experiencing Pontoise et ses Souterrains, also known as Underground Pontoise. While on the tour, you will meander through tunnels into ancient quarries. Staircases carved from rock lead into underground rooms with amazing vaults. The underground rooms were used for military purposes from the 1100s up through the 1600s. Knowledgeable tour guides will lead you through this underground world and talk you through the wealth of history hidden here. You'll need to reserve your tour in advance, so book early.
