Discover Versailles

The Great Outdoors

Versailles is known for its palaces and royal residences — however, just outside of Versailles, you’ll find a few parks and green spaces. One of these is the Arboretum de Versailles-Chèvreloup in Rocquencourt, a short drive in your camper rental from Versailles. This place is basically a museum of trees. Over 2,000 trees from all over the world are planted over 600 acres. The greenhouses feature thousands of plant species. Take a leisurely stroll along the 20-kilometer (12-mile) trail system throughout this awe-inspiring park and discover some of the most beautiful plants in the world.

The Forêt Domaniale Fausses-Reposes rests just outside the northeastern border of the city and occupies over 1,500 acres. Explore these former royal hunting grounds on eight kilometers (five miles) of walking trails or 18 kilometers (11 miles) of equestrian trails. Wildlife watchers are in for a treat here, with the chance to spot an abundance of bats and birds. Art enthusiasts might recognize the park's ponds from Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot's painting, Ville-d'Avray.

Just north of the Forêt Domaniale Fausses-Reposes is Étang Neuf. Bring the whole family to this 25-acre lake that's provided happy memories for generations. Though swimming is permitted, this lake is best known for its fishing. Anglers can reel in carp and catfish — just be sure to stop by the office before casting a line.

Camping in Versailles

There isn’t a large selection of places to park your RV rental in Versailles; however, you'll find a few places nearby. Camping De Paris is a 20-minute drive north of Versailles and allows tent camping as well as motorhome camping. Just outside of the city, within view of the Eiffel Tower on the bank of the Seine, Camping De Paris is in a prime location. More than 400 sites come with access to all the creature comforts, including restrooms, showers, and baby-changing facilities. Camping De Paris also offers Wi-Fi and is in close proximity to restaurants and bakeries.

Huttopia Versailles is located just four kilometers from the palace, making it a convenient place to park your campervan rental in Versailles. This campground can accommodate motorhomes up to 22 feet long. Electrical hookups come with select sites for campers who aren’t quite ready for an off-the-grid camping experience. Huttopia Versailles allows up to six people and one well-behaved pet per site. On-site activities include a swimming pool, outdoor spa, sports courts, archery, fishing, and more.

Exploring the City

Renting a motorhome in Versailles is one of the best ways to explore the city. Versailles is known across the world for the enormous and elegant Palace of Versailles. Before you even get into the gates, the palace will fill you with awe. The minute details, the amazing architecture, the power and history that shines from the building is unmatched. Take a guided walking tour around all the historic rooms and see how some of the richest, most powerful people in the world once lived. Tour highlights include the painted ceilings in the Hall of Mirrors, the gilded statues in the War Room, and a vast collection of art dating back to the 16th century.

The Grand Trianon is a short walk from the Palace of Versailles. Commissioned in the late 17th century by King Louis XIV as a retreat, this magnificent palace later hosted Napoleon, who oversaw its restoration and replaced the furnishings and decor lost during the Revolution. The Grand Trianon is part of the Trianon Estate, which also includes the Petit Trianon, Queen's Hamlet, Queen's Theatre, and beautifully landscaped gardens.

Another must-see is the Versailles Saint-Louis Cathedral. This 18th-century cathedral is another of Versailles' elegant landmarks filled with amazing artwork. Visitors are welcome to walk through the cathedral to admire its charm and historical significance, or pop in for one of the regularly scheduled church services.

There are plenty of petrol stations where you can fill up your motorhome rental in Versailles. Stylish restaurants and cafes are scattered throughout the city. And when the time comes to bring your camping trip to a close, the A13 can take you east towards Paris.
