It may boast a gorgeous location in the French Riviera, but Nice is often overlooked in favor of glamorous neighbors like Monaco, Cannes, and St. Tropez. This really shouldn't be the case, however, as Nice has every bit as much to offer to travelers of all ages.

Not only does Nice boast a beautiful beachfront location and climate, but it's also home to art deco architecture, world-class museums and art galleries, and excellent cuisine. Throw in a plethora of tranquil parks and outdoor spaces and it soon becomes clear that this is a holiday destination with just about everything.

Planning to book an RV in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region? Here's everything you need to know to explore in a camper rental in Nice.

Discover Nice

The Great Outdoors

With its enviable location overlooking the Mediterranean, more than 550 miles southeast of Paris, Nice is the sort of place where there are plenty of good reasons to spend lots of time in the great outdoors. Nice's outdoor spaces don't get any more iconic than the Promenade des Anglais. This four-mile walkway along the beachfront offers lovely views out over the beach to the sparkling ocean beyond, and it's popular with everyone from walkers to cyclists and rollerbladers. You'll also find some stunning examples of Belle Époque architecture while strolling along here, as well as a few bars where you can stop for a late-afternoon cocktail or two.

At the promenade's southwestern end, you'll find Parc Phoenix, another of the city's great outdoor attractions. This popular park boasts a seaside location and offers 17 acres of green space to enjoy. Wander around Parc Phoenix and you'll find 20 themed gardens displaying 2,500 species of plants, along with a lake that attracts plenty of birdlife. There's also a huge greenhouse and a zoo in the park, so it's a destination the whole family should enjoy.

If you're looking to escape the city and immerse yourself in some greenery, you'll want to steer your rental motorhome from Nice southeast towards Parc forestier du Mont-Boron. Sitting atop a tall hill, this beautiful forest boasts 140 acres of leafy surrounds, olive trees, and beautiful picnic spots. You'll find around seven miles of hiking trails to explore here, and the hike up to Fort Alban is well worth it for great views of the ocean and the surrounding terrain.

Camping in Nice

If you're looking for somewhere to park your campervan rental in Nice, you'll need to head out of the city and into the surrounding towns and villages. One option you might like to consider is Les Cent Chênes, located roughly half an hour out of Nice at Saint-Jeannet. Here, you'll find 20 campsites for campervans, caravans, and tents, all set in pretty and shaded surrounds. Some pitches also have their own toilet and shower as well as a sink for washing up.

Another option, Camping Magali, is found within 20 minutes of Nice at St-Laurent-du-Var. Set in the countryside, this park boasts 80 sites that can accommodate caravans, motorhomes, and tents. A mix of shaded and sunny sites are available, while there's also a pool on-site when you need to cool off.

You'll also find several other places where you can set up camp in your motorhome rental in Nice by searching the surrounding options, so compare a variety of campgrounds before deciding where to park your rig.

Exploring the City

When you're ready to go exploring in your rental motorhome in Nice, you'll want to make the city's Old Town your first stop. While much of Nice is dominated by wide boulevards and open squares, the oldest part of the city boasts an enchanting array of narrow, cobblestone streets. Here, you'll find architecture dating from the 17th century, wonderful little cafes, and a real Italian flavor, so it's worth spending a couple of hours just enjoying the ambiance.

Next, take a stroll up Castle Hill, or the Colline du Château, where a military citadel stood until the early 1700s. It's a bit of a climb to get there, and your calves will definitely let you know about it, but it's worth it to check out the remnants of the 12th-century chateau. There's a naval museum here to keep history buffs happy, but the real highlight of any trek up Castle Hill is taking in the spectacular views of the city, the Promenade des Anglais, and the ocean.

Of course, if you're craving some culture, Nice also boasts several museums and art galleries. Steer your rental motorhome in Nice towards Musee d'Art Moderne Et d'Art Contemporain. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art showcases more than 1,000 artworks. Work from famous names like Yves Klein and Niki de Saint Phalle is permanently on display, while regular temporary exhibitions offer new and different ways to experience contemporary art.

Whether you want culture, history, or natural beauty, you'll find plenty to enjoy in Nice. If you want to explore another of France's largest cities, Marseille is just a little over two hours away. There are plenty of good reasons why you should rent a motorhome in Nice and start planning your perfect vacation in the south of France.
