This park is located in the southwest portion of the uniquely-shaped state of Iowa. The small locality of Bruneau is the nearest town to the park, as well as the park's namesake. The nearest larger city is Boise, the state's capital found around 60 miles to the northwest. The park's claim to fame is that it contains the tallest single-structure sand dune in all of North America.

The park is comprised of several sand dunes and small lakes, and the Snake River runs through it as well. Typical activities enjoyed here include hiking, horseback riding, picnicking and water sports on the lakes and river. The sand dunes provide opportunities to enjoy their own unique activities.

Getting Outdoors

Renting an RV at this park will give you the chance to engage in a variety of recreational activities. There is an observatory on-site that is open weekend evenings during the warmer months. A large telescope is available to assist visitors in viewing the heavens up close. The park also features a Visitor's Center that highlights the ecosystems that make up the park, as well as how the inland dunes were formed.

The dunes themselves offer a unique experience that can't be enjoyed at all parks. Visitors can hike to the top of the sandhills and be treated to 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. Other fun activities offered by these are sandboarding, or sledding down the dunes. Equipment rentals are available from the visitor's center. There are also several miles of trails for those who enjoy horseback riding throughout the park.

The small lakes, ponds and nearby river offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors as well. They also allow an escape from the hot, summer sun. Fishing, boating, swimming, and paddle sports can all be enjoyed at these locales. There are also plenty of spots to enjoy a picnic lunch around the park.
