Henrys Lake State Park is located near the very small community of Island Park, Idaho, which is in the far northeast corner of the state. The park is situated less than 10 miles from the state border with neighboring Montana. A very small portion of that large state separates Idaho from Wyoming in this area, making the lake also only around 20 miles from the western border of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The nearest larger town is West Yellowstone, MT, while the nearest larger city is Idaho Falls, ID, at almost 100 miles to the south.

This is a very scenic and rugged part of the country. Henrys Lake State Park is nestled in a lower-elevation amongst the Rocky Mountains. The wild of nature reigns supreme here. This is the home of rivers, alpine lakes, and large wild animals, such as moose and bear. Large national parks and scenic mountain towns can all be found nearby, and all offer plenty of recreational activities to enjoy.

Getting Outdoors

Visitors should be aware that the cold season is lengthy and extreme in this part of the country. There are many different hiking trails located at both this park and throughout the local region, including at both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. The trails are available in a variety of lengths and difficulty levels. Some meander through low-lying meadows or along local waterways, others traverse to the summits of nearby mountains. Hikers should be bear-aware on any of these trails, as this is grizzly country.

Camping at Henrys Lake State Park

Henrys Lake State Park makes it easy to camp with an RV. There is a campground on-site, and there are several other RV parks available around the local area, each offering a variety of amenities.

The campground at Henrys Lake State Park provides campsites that have some hookups. The campground is open from Memorial Day weekend through the middle of October, weather permitting. The campsite offers bathrooms, showers, and some WiFi access in certain locations. A stay here will give you easy access to both the lake, but also the many hiking and biking trails available at the park.

The Yellowstone Park / Mountainside KOA Journey is found not far from Henrys Lake State Park just outside of West Yellowstone. The KOA is open from the middle of May through the beginning of October and allows pets. Full-hookup campsites, cable, and WiFi are also available here. There is even a tour shuttle that runs during the busy months. As there is so much to do in this part of the country, many people enjoy RV camping at Henrys Lake State Park, so you should be able to easily find any services you may be needing.

Exploring the Area

When you book an RV in Fremont County, you will find yourself surrounded by beautiful locations to visit. Earthquake Lake is located around 25 miles north of Henrys' Lake State Park. This was the site where a large landslide occurred, in the late 1950s, spawned by an earthquake, that blocked the local river and created the lake. The event occurred at the height of the tourist season. A Visitor's Center on-site gives details of the event. State park RV camping makes it easy to experience all the unique destinations available in the local region.

The well-known tourist town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is also located within a day's drive of the park. This town is known for its art galleries and historic downtown area. During the snowy months, numerous ski trails are available around the local mountains. There is also an eclectic variety of restaurants where you can eat and hot spring resorts where you can relax in waters warmed by the earth's natural heat.

In addition to art galleries, there are several other museums in this town. At the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum, you can learn all about the history of the local area. From the gold rush to the American Indian tribes who first conquered this wild land, learn the stories of the many different people who have tried to make it here. At the Jackson Hole Children's Museum, you will find hands-on exhibits to entertain young children.
