Discover Salmon

The Great Outdoors

Salmon is surrounded by national forests, like Sawtooth National Forest and Salmon-Challis National Forest, making it an ideal destination for outdoor adventurers of all kinds. The Salmon-Challis National Forest is just north of the city along Highway 93, and in the forest, visitors can engage in a wide variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, hunting, and horseback riding. This national forest is also home to the Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness, which is one of the largest contiguous wilderness areas in the continental United States. The wilderness is home to the towering Salmon River Mountains and Bighorn Crags as well as the stunning Salmon River Canyon, which visitors can access along the Salmon River Trail. However, although the wilderness is gorgeous, it can also be dangerous if you don’t come prepared. Be sure to pack the Salmon rental RV with supplies like food, water, and a map when you embark on a hike, and check the US Forest Service’s website for current trail conditions.

This seemingly endless stream of outdoor activities doesn’t end when temperatures drop. Many skiers and snowboarders can head across the border into Montana for the Lost Trail Powder Mountain, which boasts 20+ feet of natural snowfall in a normal year. If you’d rather ski cross-country, you can head to one of the many trails in the Salmon-Cobalt Ranger District in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Novices can head to the short, 1.4-mile Aspen Loop Trail, or more experienced skiers can brave the Powderhouse Gulch Trail for a rewarding skiing adventure. If you’re not much of a skier, head to the Mackay Mine Hill Area for sledding, tubing, and even snowmobiling, or you can check out the area’s numerous hot springs, including the Goldbug and Sharkey Hot Springs. With your Salmon rental camper, you’ll easily be able to explore the beauty of the northern Rockies.

RV Parks

RV camping is astoundingly popular in the area, so you can easily find a place to park your rental RV near Salmon. The national forests surrounding the city are dotted with campgrounds, including the Shoup Bridge Campground, Williams Lake Campground, and the Twin Creek Campground. These three campgrounds are easily accessible from the city and have camping spaces large enough to accommodate RVs, and at each campground, visitors are just minutes away from numerous trailheads and water recreation areas, making them ideal jumping-off points for a true adventure through the wilderness. However, these sites do not offer hookups, and they may not be able to accommodate very large RVs.

If you’d rather stay a bit closer to civilization, check out the Century II Campgrounds, the Wagonhammer RV Park, Waters Edge RV Park and Pizzeria, or the Village at North Fork. The Century II Campgrounds offers an array of basic amenities, such as full hookups and laundry, close to downtown Salmon. If you’d rather stay on the river, check out the Wagonhammer RV Park, which offers full hookups, modern facilities, and an on-site boat ramp. Waters Edge Idaho RV Park and Pizzeria brings you farther out into the wilderness, but with modern amenities like wireless internet access and on-site restaurants, you’ll feel right at home. The Village at North Fork is also a great option for RV renters looking for modern amenities in the heart of the wilderness. With so many options to choose from, you’ll easily find a great home base for exploring the wilderness of Idaho.

Exploring the City

As a relatively small city of outdoor enthusiasts, Salmon provides the perfect balance for RV adventurers looking for a peaceful, quaint town with all of the amenities of a larger city. After spending a day hiking through the Bitterroot National Forest, head to downtown Salmon to enjoy the shops, galleries, and restaurants that line the city street. In this traditional Western-style downtown, unique boutiques offer everything from handmade jewelry to custom cowboy clothing, and foodies can find bistros, bakeries, and cocktail bars.

Salmon is also home to the Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural, and Educational Center, where visitors can learn about the Lewis and Clark expeditions and the Native American tribes of the area. Visitors to the Sacajawea Center can also take a short interpretive hike through a park. In addition to these attractions, the town also has all of the basics needed for the motorhome rental in Salmon, such as repair shops and grocery stores. When you book an RV in Salmon, you’ll seamlessly navigate through the city as you enjoy its quirkiness and adventurous spirit.
