The huge Lake of Egypt was created by the Southern Illinois Power Cooperative with the aim of supplying cooling water to their new coal-burning power plant. In 1962, the South fork of the Saline River was dammed, and the lake that we know today was created. The name was chosen from the nickname of 'Little Egypt' of southern Illinois. Today the lake offers much more than its original purpose, as it also provides a huge range of recreational and relaxational activities for those that live in the surrounding towns of Pulleys Mill, Carterville, and Goreville, and also much further afield.
