Discover Asti

The Great Outdoors

Asti is home to a long list of man-made and natural attractions, but if you're looking for somewhere to relax and unwind, you'll find one of the city's best parks at Parco Rivo Crosio. Located a short drive northwest of the city center, this pretty park offers tall trees, plenty of green space, and meandering walking paths. It's the ideal spot to enjoy a peaceful walk or a picnic. Those traveling with a pooch will be pleased to know that there's also an off-leash dog area here.

If you'd like to explore the surrounding countryside, steer your motorhome rental from Asti southeast towards the Rocchetta Tanaro Natural Park. This 296-acre park takes in one of the few remaining remnants of dense forest in the area as well as a section of the River Tanaro. Sometimes referred to as “the wood of the Marquis”, this park offers walking, cycling, and horseback riding opportunities. Hikers will love tackling the Circuit trail along the banks of the river and through some of the area's tallest trees.

Alternatively, you might want to make the 15-minute drive northwest of the city to the Riserva Regionale Valle Andona, Valle Botto e Valle Grande. This 2,300-acre reserve protects the area's unique paleontological discoveries. Here, you'll find shells deposited by the sea that could once be found in the area millions of years ago, plus fossils from a variety of land- and water-dwelling vertebrates. It's a beautiful park and well worth a visit for anyone interested in paleontology.

Camping in Asti

Once you book an RV in Piedmont, you'll need to settle on somewhere to stay during your visit. The good news is that there are several campgrounds in the surrounding area, so it's worth comparing a few of them before choosing where to set up camp.

One option you might like to consider is the Camping Umberto Cagni, which sits in green countryside just over a mile from Asti's city center. Open from the start of April until the end of September, this campground offers a range of sites for caravans and campervans in grassy surroundings. Facilities include a kids' play area, soccer field, and petanque court.

Another campground worth a look is Camping International Le Fonti, which is roughly 20 minutes south of Asti. Open from late March through late October, this campsite offers sites set among pretty poplars. Each campsite offers electric hookups. Other facilities include a pizzeria, a kids' play area, and two swimming pools.

Exploring the City

Your first stop when you start exploring in your travel trailer rental in Asti may well be the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. This stunning Gothic cathedral, which is also known as the Duomo, was built, rebuilt, and added to several times between the 11th and 18th centuries. The bell tower in the church dates to the mid-13th century, while the interior artworks and frescoes by Renaissance artist Gandolfino d'Asti are also highlights.

Next, if you want to explore more of the city's best art, head to Palazzo Mazzetti to check out the Museo e Pinacoteca Civica. The palace itself dates to the 17th and 18th centuries and was once home to the noble Mazzetti family, but the Italian artworks inside are the real highlight here. The works date from the 17th to the 19th centuries, with some of the standouts including paintings by Michelangelo Pittatore and sculptures by Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo. There's also a collection of Roman artifacts to admire, so it's worth booking a guided tour for a closer look.

Finally, if you're keen to explore in a rental RV in Asti, it's well worth timing your visit to coincide with the Palio di Asti. Held on the first Sunday in September, this famous horse racing event was first held back in 1273. It's a hugely popular occasion, and there's a real party atmosphere right across the city. The Palio di Asti also features a huge medieval parade that leads to Piazza Alfieri before the exciting racing action kicks off.

When you rent an RV in Asti, you're spoiled for choice when deciding which attractions and activities to visit. And when you've finished enjoying everything Asti has to offer, you can always check out nearby destinations like Alessandria and Novara. If you're planning a vacation in northwestern Italy, be sure to add Asti to your list of must-visit destinations.
