The Great Outdoors

Michigan is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with countless parks scattered throughout the state. The shores of Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, and Lake Huron are all lined with dazzling state parks, and Muskegon is home to two of the very best. PJ Hoffmaster State Park contains the Hoffmaster Campground, so you can enjoy at least one of the state parks in Michigan without having to drive anywhere. Hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, boating, and camping make for a well-rounded experience, while the on-site Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center helps visitors understand the complex dune ecosystems contained in both the park and around the state. Also found in Muskegon, Muskegon State Park is another state-run park with a campground of its own. Twelve miles of nature trails, fishing spots, and swimming beaches help make this park a popular getaway from Muskegon and Grand Rapids. Ice skating, snowshoeing, or watching Olympic athletes practice on the park’s luge track are also interesting ways to pass the time if you visit in the winter.Several minutes’ drive north of the campsites at Hoffmaster Campground, another state park adds to Muskegon's reputation for being a fantastic outdoor hub. Duck Lake State Park has some impressive beaches of its own, where swimming, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking will take up most of your time. The park is a few miles from Lake Michigan, but Duck Lake is the central focus of the park. There are plenty of other places to explore with your RV rental in the great state of Michigan, and the farther you drive, the more you can see. Manistee National Forest is no more than a half-hour's drive from Muskegon, giving you half a million acres of wilderness to trek through. Part of the forest borders Lake Michigan, giving it undeveloped beaches and towering sand dunes to watch the sunset from. There is more to the forest than its beaches, though; an endless number of lakes, evergreen tree groves, and mountains are scattered throughout the forest, making it a popular skiing and snowboarding destination during the colder months when snowfalls.

City Attractions

Hoffmaster Campground is located around halfway between Muskegon and Grand Haven, and although Muskegon is the larger of the bunch, either town will do for sightseeing activities. Down in Grand Haven, the Tri-Cities Historical Museum is run by knowledgeable docents with a knack for the past. Tour the museum space and listen to fascinating stories about Grand Haven and the fur trade that first brought pioneers to the region. The museum also goes into great depth regarding the Native Americans of Michigan, with artifacts and tools used by the first inhabitants of North America. When you book an RV in Muskegon County, you can also visit Muskegon with minimal effort. The Muskegon Museum of Art is found in an extraordinary old building featuring Greek columns and an ornate front facade. The building isn’t the only work of art on-site, with a massive collection of French impressionist paintings housed inside, along with plenty of other masterpieces once owned by the wealthy lumber barons of Muskegon.Military historians will enjoy a visit to the USS Silversides Submarine Museum and the USS LST 393. Several ships and a two-story museum highlight the things you can see at this piece of American history, where you can tour real, decommissioned ships and submarines used in conflicts like WWII and the Vietnam War.

Questions about RVs?

Q.

What type of RV should I choose?

A.

Start by determining how many people are planning to travel with you. Going on a solo-journey? Choose a camper van or a teardrop trailer. Bringing the whole family along for the ride? Consider a spacious Class A or five-wheel.

You’ll also want to consider amenities. For example, if you’re planning to cook on the road, you’ll want a kitchenette. If your campground doesn’t have public restrooms, you’ll want to search RVs with bathrooms. Check out full descriptions of our models to help you decide here.

Q.

Do the RVs have bathrooms?

A.

Yes. Class A’s, Class B’s, and Class C’s and five-Wheels typically have bathrooms. Depending on where you plan on camping, you’ll want to double-check the availability of restrooms if selecting a rig without a bathroom. Nervous about renting an RV with a bathroom? Owners can help show you how to clean the tank or will offer to do it for you for a fee.

Q.

How does check-in work?

A.

Once an Owner approves your RV reservation, you can coordinate a time to pick up your rig or have it delivered to your doorstep or campsite. At that point, the owner will do a key exchange with you and walk you through the RV and answer any questions you might have.
