Discover Miles City

Miles City is an interesting small city on Interstate 94 in eastern Montana, between the cities of Billings and Bismarck, North Dakota. The city has been around since the 19th century, originally just a cluster of cabins in a fort settlement on the Yellowstone River. The town is named for General Nelson A. Miles, the commander of the original fort, who engaged in frequent clashes with the native people of Montana.

For a time, Miles City was a rapidly growing, up-and-coming city in Montana, before becoming overshadowed by Billings, the major commercial and transportation hub of the state. Despite its small population today, Miles City is a lovely place to visit when you rent an RV. Flanked by rolling hills and delightful evergreen forests, you can book an RV in Miles City and have the time of your life.

The Great Outdoors

The main reason for visiting the great state of Montana is usually its exceptional natural beauty and the high number of parks and national forests you can find in the state. Rent an RV in Miles City, and you can explore the state with ease. You don’t even have to drive far to reach Pirogue Island State Park, just a few miles from the city center. This fantastic public recreation area has miles of hiking trails winding alongside the Yellowstone River, and stunning views of the area.

On the outskirts of Glendive to the east, Makoshika State Park provides visitors with yet another place to bring a Miles City campervan rental. The name comes for the Lakota word “land of bad spirits,” due to the land's strange and eerily beautiful appearance. Makoshika State Park is the largest of its kind in Montana, with archery ranges, campgrounds, an outdoor amphitheater, and a whole bunch of dinosaur fossils scattered throughout the badlands.

If you want to make your vacation a multi-state road trip, heading to the neighboring state of Wyoming is a fantastic idea for several reasons. The best reasons to dip into Wyoming, though, are the two national parks you can find in the northwestern corner. Yellowstone National Park is one of the country’s best-known parks, famous for its sulfur pools, hot springs, geological formations, and hot geysers like Old Faithful which erupts periodically, shooting a plume of scalding water high into the air. Grand Teton National Park is less crowded, with plenty of mountain treks to conquer and scenic vistas to find. In the winter, you can ski or snowboard down the mountains, blanketed with some of the best powdery snow imaginable. Both parks allow for camping so you will feel right at home with your Miles City motorhome rental.

RV Parks

You will easily find a few campgrounds to visit when you have an RV rental near Miles City, and even more if you venture farther away from the town. Small Towne RV Park is one such place, a pet-friendly park with spacious campsites and all the standard amenities you would expect.

Miles City KOA is one of the hundreds of parks belonging to the KOA chain of campgrounds. There are lots of things to occupy your time while you are a guest of the park, like swimming in the pool or renting bicycles to explore the town.

Big Sky Camp & RV Park is a short drive out of town, with easy access to the downtown area and its many businesses. The park is near the Custer County Fairgrounds, with wireless internet, cable TV, restrooms, and many more reasons to stay.

City Sightseeing

Miles City is not nearly as large as Billings or Bozeman, but you can find a number of quality ways to spend your time in town during the day. If you like museums, the WaterWorks Art Museum is a beloved staple of Miles City that deserves a visit. The name comes from the fact that the collection is housed in the old water treatment facility. The display is changed every six weeks, with contemporary and classic art pieces and historic photographs. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop for souvenirs.

The Range Rider's Museum is a massive tribute to the Old West, with a treasure trove of artifacts in the form of saddles, clothing, weapons, tools, and other staples of the outlaw days of the 19th century. You can truly feel the spirit of the west coursing through the museum when you tour this amazing collection.

The Montana Theatre in town is a charming local theater with a few screens and an intimate setting. It brings you back to the old days of cinema while playing modern-day movies that you can watch with your family. There are wineries and restaurants in town that you can try out when you are feeling hungry and many other things to do in neighboring cities.
