Lake Harris Campground is named after the lake it sits next to and is a fairly new camping area, having been built between 1960 and 1962. The lake receives fresh water from the Hudson River and is connected by the river and narrows to Rich Lake and Arbutus Pond farther downstream. It's a popular spot for boating, canoeing, and kayaking, and is home to a variety of fish species such as large and smallmouth bass, walleye, and northern pike, to name a few.

Lake Harris is a short distance from several hiking trails, many of which begin in and head out from the nearby town of Newcomb. A few of the trails end at the peaks of Goodnow and Vanderwhacker mountains, where you'll find fire towers that enhance the already spectacular view; another trail will lead you into the High Peaks Wilderness Area. Other nearby attractions to check out when you rent an RV near Lake Harris Campground include the Adirondack Park Visitor Interpretive Center, the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, and the Historic Tahawus Tract and the Tahawus Ghost Town.

Getting Outdoors

Head an hour's drive south with the Newcomb camper rental, and you can check out the Hudson Gorge Wilderness. The area is named after both the Hudson River and the gorge it passes through, which is located in the center of the wilderness. This section of the river has many rapids and cascades, leading to its designation as a wild river, while the parts above and below the gorge are classified as scenic rivers. The Hudson Gorge Wilderness, located near the town of Indian Lake, is a popular destination for kayakers and has something to offer all skill levels, from beginner to expert. The wilderness is also a good choice for hiking and primitive camping.

Hoffman Notch Wilderness is a “notch” or valley located in the Blue Ridge Range between Hoffman Mountain and Washburn Ridge. The landscape has streams and ponds dotted amongst forested areas and more than a dozen miles of trails where you can hike in the summer and go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in the winter. The streams and ponds can be reached from the hiking trails. Brook trout and northern pike are quite common in several of the fishing spots. RV camping at Lake Harris Campground means you can take your catch from the water straight to the fridge.

Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area has numerous lakes and ponds within its territory, but its namesake, Pharaoh Lake, is one of the largest lakes within the Adirondacks and is completely encompassed by forest preserve territory. The rest of Pharaoh Lake Wilderness consists of smaller mountains and hills with the lakes and ponds scattered intermittently. The preserve has tens of miles of hiking trails that range in length from less than a mile to several miles and number in the dozens. The park has designated areas where you can practice primitive camping. In the winter, the trails become cross-country skiing runs (or you can use them to go snowshoeing).

Camping at Lake Harris Campground

The campground is situated on the northern shore of Lake Harris. It is surrounded by hardwood trees that change in color with the seasons. Many of the Lake Harris campsites are located along the water's edge, and campground amenities include restrooms with hot showers and flush toilets, a dump station and recycling center, a boat launch, and a picnic area. If you'd like to go fishing or take a trip out on the lake, you can rent rowboats and canoes on site. If chilling out and taking in the atmosphere is your preference, the campground has firewood for sale.

Blue Ridge Falls Campsites is a seasonal RV campground near Schroon Lake. The campground has numerous amenities to make your stay an enjoyable one, such as a campground store, a swimming pool, and basketball and tennis courts. There are restrooms with showers, a dump station, and WiFi; some of the campsites have pull-through access, and some have either partial or full hookups.

Exploring the Area

Elizabethtown is a small town that was named after the wife of one of the earliest settlers; despite its size, the town has two landmarks that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (the Hand-Hale Historic District and Hubbard Hall). It's also home to the Adirondack History Centre Museum, which has exhibits documenting the history of the area, nature trails, and gardens where you can sit and enjoy the serenity of the landscape. The town has a handful of restaurants (and more nearby), providing a selection of your favorite comfort foods. One of the advantages of Lake Harris Campground camping is being able to grab a takeout order of your dinner and enjoy it in the comfort and privacy of your temporary home-on-wheels.

Keene Valley is a hamlet located within the town of Keene in Essex County, New York, but still has several worthwhile attractions despite its size. The town is the starting point for several trails that lead to nearby lakes, streams, and mountains. It's also a good place to stop if you need to do some shopping, and its restaurant scene has a substantial number of venues that include cafes and diners, bistros, and pub restaurants. The fare is primarily American comfort food that everyone will enjoy.
