Getting Outdoors

More than seven miles of hiking trails wind through Lake Norman State Park and take you to scenic picnic sites and secret fishing spots. The Dragonfly Trail is a family favorite and features educational nature displays and interactive lift-and-drop panels. The paved path makes pushing strollers and wheelchairs a breeze. Adrenaline junkies can take on more than 30 miles of single-track mountain bike trails. Lake Norman is a seventh heaven for anglers, with a bountiful supply of crappie, bluegill, perch, and catfish. On a good day, you could also reel in largemouth and spotted bass – perfect for a fry up back at your RV rental. Fish from the shoreline of launch a boat and try your luck in deeper water. Be sure to check NC Wildlife Resources Commission regulations before you cast a line. Patrolled by lifeguards from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the sandy beach is a great place to cool off in the summer. Spend the day basking in the sunshine, building sandcastles, and splashing in the crystalline water. You can also rent kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, and pedal boats from the visitors' center or pack your own with a motorhome camping rig. It's easy to spend an entire day on the beach, so bring your own picnic lunch or stock up on soda and ice cream at the concession stand.

All feature picnic tables and grills which makes it easy to enjoy your meals outdoors. Most sites are surrounded by hardwoods, so expect plenty of privacy and lots of shade when state park RV camping at Lake Norman. Campfires are also allowed in designated fire pits, so don’t forget your s'mores supplies. The fun continues after dark with ranger-led stargazing programs and interpretive programs for the kids. Most sites are non-electric so bring a generator or keep things simple with a gas lamp and a crackling fire. Size regulations for rental motorhomes at Lake Norman State Park vary from site to site, with a maximum of 71 feet allowed. Pets are welcome, just be sure to clean up after your dog. The campsite enforces a six person per site maximum so if you're traveling as a larger group consider booking side-by-side sites.

While there's plenty to keep you occupied in Lake Norman State Park, it's worth getting out and exploring what's on offer in Iredell County. For a fix of family-friendly fun, spend the day at Zootastic Park, where you can get up close with exotic animals like tigers, giraffes, sloths, and spider monkeys. A 25-minute drive north, the Fort Dobbs Historic Site recalls the turmoil of the 18th-century French and Indian War. Today, you can explore the site, enjoy a picnic, and shop for history-themed souvenirs at the gift shop. Need to replenish your supplies? The nearby town of Troutman is a five-minute drive away and offers cafes, restaurants, grocery stores and gas stations. Keep an eye out for North Carolina specialties such as peach cobbler, glazed doughnuts, she-crab soup, and shrimp 'n grits.
