Situated in the northern part of North Dakota lies Lake Sakakawea. The lake was created in the late 1950s after the nearby Garrison Dam was built. It’s named after Sakakawea, a Native American woman who helped Lewis and Clark during their exploration.

The lake is located inside the Fort Berthold Reservation and is a popular place for fishing. It’s one of the largest man-made lakes in the state providing visitors with plenty of things to do and see while here. In addition to this, it’s only a short drive away from cities such as Minot and New Town.

Getting Outdoors

You will discover plenty of things to do outdoors while visiting Lake Sakakawea. A popular activity to do is fishing. The lake spans over 178 miles long providing you with plenty of space to fish in. Some species you’ll find while here include northern pike, walleye, and trout. The lake has some boat ramps nearby as well as a few marinas where there are boat rentals available.

Another outdoor recreational activity to do at Lake Sakakawea is hiking. The lake is located next to Lake Sakakawea State Park which provides guests with plenty of hiking trails to explore. One option is the Shoreline Trail which runs about three miles long and provides views of Garrison Dam. There’s also the North Country Trail which is about a mile long and will take you by ravines and prairies.

Visitors could also go birdwatching. Lake Sakakawea is a sought-after spot by many different types of birds, such as sparrows, ducks, eagles, and terns, due to the vast amount of grasslands and wetlands that surround it. During the winter, it’s also used as a nesting destination for gulls. Hike around the lake to view the birds or drive their RV to the Garrison Dam which provides panoramic views of the lake which might help you to see certain species better.

In addition to this, there are also volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and playgrounds available.

Exploring the Area

If you’d like to get out and explore the surrounding area with your travel trailer, there are a handful of places to stop by at. About two hours away in Minot is Scandinavian Heritage Park. This heritage park is designed to tell of the history and culture of countries such as Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, and Finland. It’s home to many interesting attractions, including traditional churches and houses, a Dala horse, a statue of Hans Christian Andersen, and a sauna. It’s also home to a few different Scandinavian heritage societies which host various types of events throughout the year.

While in Minot, stop by the Dakota Territory Air Museum. This aviation museum features numerous vintage aircraft pieces and exhibits that tell more about their history. You’ll also find plenty of art pieces depicting airplanes hanging in the museum. In addition to this, the museum hosts a few different events throughout the year dedicated to aviation history.

In New Town, there’s the Crow Flies High Butte Historic Site. This 253-acre historic site was once visited by Lewis and Clark during their exploration of the West. At low tide, the lost town of Sanish that is hidden within it is visible. While at this historic site, you’ll also be able to view Lake Sakakawea and the Garrison Dam.

Another destination to visit with your camper is the Frontier Museum in Williston. The museum features a general store, school, and church that are a portal back in time to the 19th-century. While here, you’ll be able to tour the interior of these structures and view exhibits which feature artifacts such as fashion pieces and books.

There are a handful of gas stations located around the border of Lake Sakakawea to take your RV to. You’ll also find numerous restaurants that sell various types of meals, including many local favorites, such as goulash and knoephla. There are also a few fast-food eateries around as well.
