Getting Outdoors

The Coquille River remains the parks main feature, with many people choosing to spend time fishing, boating or simply walking along the river. Fishing enthusiasts with an RV rental in the area will be pleased to know that the river boasts excellent and varied fishing all year round. However, home to a healthy population of winter steelhead fish, it is best to try and schedule your trip during the winter months. Head to the south fork of the Coquille River for the best chance to catch this elusive species. Alternatively, if you happen to be camping at Bullards Beach State Park during the summer months, you will have a good chance of catching a large Chinook salmon.

Whilst fishing on the river, you will undoubtedly catch a glimpse of the historic Coquille River Lighthouse that sits proudly on the cape. Restored in 1977, this lighthouse has stood here since the late 19th century, making it one of the oldest lighthouses in Oregon. Take time out from fishing to visit the lighthouse and enjoy a scenic view across the river to the nearby town of Bandon, and over the seemingly infinite Pacific Ocean. From mid-May to September the lighthouse is staffed with friendly volunteers that will teach you about the area’s history and even take you on a tour inside the lighthouse!

The Coquille River Lighthouse can be reached on one of the many trails that meander through the state park. Most of the trails begin from the state park RV campground, making them easily accessible if you are staying here. The Bullards Beach Hike is one of the most extensive trails in the park, starting from the campground, winding through the fore-dunes, stretching along the beach and finally finishing at the lighthouse. If you are looking to do something a little different, consider completing the trail on horseback!
