1964 Airstream Overlander: "Lucy"

Jemez SpringsNM

Lucy is a fully restored 1964 Airstream Overlander, 27 feet in length, sleeping two to four comfortably. She has all original cabinets, appliances, hardware and accessories. Her interior has been meticulously restored, with refurbished or re-created cabinetry that matches the originals from the factory, and all new curtains, upholstery and floors. For comfort that wasn’t available in 1964, we have outfitted the trailer with a flat-screen TV with Blu-Ray player and a small library of classic films, as well as an efficient and quiet roof-mounted air conditioner. She hooks up to campground electricity and water, and has a full bathroom with stand-up shower. Lucy can be towed by any modern mid- or full-size pickup or SUV, and some larger crossovers. She’s got a gorgeous shine, and gets thumbs up everywhere she goes. Rentals come with linens for the gaucho and rear full-size convertible bed, pillows and blankets, towels, vintage kitchenware (plates, glasses, flatware), pots and pans, a coffee maker, cleaning supplies, a decently stocked pantry, and a few vintage magazines. We offer the following add-ons for rent on a daily basis. Make a note of what you might want to include on your trip and ask us when you’re making your reservation: - camp chairs - BioLite wood-burning grill - Coleman propane camp grill - portable canopy - bicycles Lucy's backstory: Co-founder Michael Vallen discovered Lucy along a small river in Southern Illinois in 2012. Her previous, longtime owner closed her up and left her unattended for an unknown amount of time before eventually passing away, and so she had begun the steep decline that happens whenever a trailer is abandoned to the elements. We purchased her from the previous owner’s daughter. It was our first long-distance purchase and retrieval, and it turned out to be quite an adventure: Naively, we set out from Illinois using the four old tires that were mounted on the trailer when we found her, plus an equally old spare. Well, over the course of the trip, we blew three of the five tires, decreasing our speed as we progressed and eventually bailing off of the interstate and finishing our trip hobbling along on two tires using back roads. (Since then, we always, ALWAYS, bring brand new rims and tires when we’re retrieving a trailer. Lesson learned, the very stressful way.) Over the next year, Lucy underwent a ground-up interior and exterior restoration with very close attention paid to respecting the originality of the trailer. It was during this project that we really learned how to restore vintage trailers. We're grateful for Baltimore-based Frank Yensan of Frank's Trailer Works for his willingness to share his knowledge and wisdom during the restoration process; he set us on our current path. Fun anecdote: Lucy is the reason that Nomad Mobile Motor Lodge exists. This was co-founder Michael Vallen’s second vintage Airstream, and his first ground-up restoration. She had been to many places in her first year out on the road after the restoration, but her most momentous voyage was a cross-country trip with an old friend who really, REALLY needed a vacation. The two friends started in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and drove over the course of two weeks all the way to Big Sur, California, with stops in between at Marfa TX, Chaco Canyon in northern New Mexico, Meteor Crater in Arizona, Pinecrest Retreat in the mountains outside of San Diego CA, and Malibu RV Park on the Pacific Ocean in Malibu. Somewhere along the way, an idea was hatched to put together a business that combined the road-trip vacation experience with the more permanent vintage trailer parks they were visiting into a passion-fueled business that basically makes everyone happy, including the friend and co-pilot, who became the business’s co-founder.

Trailer Cleaning Fee Required

We deliver our vintage trailers freshly cleaned inside and out. We charge a nominal cleaning fee after your rental term to come back around and sweep & scrub the interior of the trailer, remove and launder the linens, and reset all of the interior elements to trip-launch standards. We appreciate it when our clients leave us with a broom-swept floor, clean dishes, fully evacuated gray and black tanks, cloth-wiped bathroom fixtures, clean oven, and empty refrigerator. We’ll gladly refund the trailer cleaning fee for any renters who return the trailer to us in the same condition in which it was delivered, plus an expression of our greatest appreciation for your cleanliness!! (Note this cleaning fee does not cover deep cleaning or repairs needed after an accident such as spilled beverages, deep stains or damage to the interior or exterior of the trailer; any damages such as these will first be taken out of the security deposit, and beyond that, claimed through your Outdoorsy trip insurance policy.)
