The Jemez National Recreation Area is located near Jemez Springs in north-central New Mexico. This is a very rural area, comprised mostly of rugged, forested hills. The nearest larger town is Bernalillo, which is around 40 miles to the south, while the nearest large city is Albuquerque, which is around 70 miles to the south.

This area is located within the Santa Fe National Forest, so there are numerous recreational activities that can be enjoyed here. There are also all sorts of historical and natural sites that you can visit. Should you need to refresh your supplies, you will find a few gas stations and grocery stores within 25 miles of the recreation area. The Valles Caldera National Preserve is located just east of the recreation area. This is the site of an extinct volcano, and it is known to be quite scenic. Exploring the Area

This former village is more than 700 years old and is open for tours. Some of the prehistoric people who were the ancestors to the local Pueblo tribes once lived here. There are also other interesting locales to visit nearby. The Soda Dam is a natural structure constructed of calcium carbonate mineral deposits that come from the local waters. A small waterfall can be observed here as well if water levels are high enough. Battleship Rock is a picturesque rock formation found nearby. A waterfall is found here, as well, and there are places to enjoy a picnic lunch!
