Situated near the confluence of the Little Tennessee and Tellico rivers, Vonore is a historically rich town near the border with North Carolina. It’s renowned as one of the richest archaeological regions in the southeastern United States, including ancient Native American sites and a British-built fort. The town of Vonore had its origins in the late 19th century, following the arrival of the Atlanta, Knoxville and Northern Railroad, although most of its surrounding archaeological sites were flooded with the creation of the Tellico Dam in 1979.

Vonore’s proximity to this vast recreational lake and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park make it an ideal place to rent an RV while exploring eastern Tennessee. It’s well-served by family-friendly campgrounds while being just 45 minutes’ drive from bustling Knoxville.

Discover Vonore

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Vonore and head to the waters of Tellico Lake, which encompasses around 16,000 acres along the Little Tennessee River. It’s a hub for water sports and recreational pursuits, with everything from sailing and canoeing to fishing and golf on offer. Cast a line from your boat or one of the fishing piers to lure bass, yellow perch, and walleye, or stretch your legs along the scenic East Lakeshore Trail.

Vonore makes a good base for exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It encompasses more than 500,000 acres along Tennessee’s border with North Carolina and is traversed by part of the legendary Appalachian Trail. Soak up the commanding views of Cades Cove and Fontana Lake from the top of Gregory Bald or follow the every-popular Alum Cave Trail to the summit of Mount LeConte for sweeping views of Clingmans Dome.

Vonore also serves as a gateway to the Nantahala National Forest in neighboring North Carolina. Its name translates from Cherokee to the “Land of the Noonday Sun,” and it’s divided into numerous wilderness areas that offer no shortage of recreational pursuits. Hike to the summit of Blackrock Mountain for breathtaking vistas of the Plott Balsam mountain range or stretch your legs along the trail that leads to Cullasaja Falls, then cast a line to see what’s biting in the waters of Balsam Lake.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Vonore and make the 10-minute drive south to the Notchy Creek Campground, which offers just over 50 wooded and lakefront sites. There are boat docks and an easy-access boat ramp for getting out on the water, as well as an on-site convenience store where you can pick up essentials.

Another nearby option is the Toqua Campground where you’ll find 76 RV sites overlooking the water. There are electric, water, and sewer hookups available, as well as a boat ramp, swimming beach, and a mini convenience store.

Or, head north to the Lazy Acres RV Park in Lenoir City, which offers 66 spacious RV sites (including 18 pull throughs) overlooking Tellico Lake. There are full hookups with 20, 30, or 50amp service, as well as direct access to numerous walking trails.

You can also make the 10-minute drive into Madisonville where there’s a Walmart where you may be able to park the Vonore motorhome rental for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Vonore and head to the Vonore Heritage Museum where you can delve into the rich history of the town. Begin your visit at the museum where you can learn about the history of the fort, including its role in helping to garner Cherokee support. Witness one of the occasional battle reenactments that take place at the fort or just explore the hiking trails that wind through the surrounding area.

If you’re interested in the Native American history of the region, be sure to visit the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum. It pays tribute to this much-loved Cherokee leader who was responsible for creating a written language for his people.
