Situated in Cumberland County, Virginia is Bear Creek Lake State Park. The state park runs over 326 acres and was built in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps after the Virginia Department of Agriculture requested a project be done to help highlight the local forests.

Recognizing a need to restore and preserve wilderness, the state of West Virginia purchased several acres of wilderness in 1938 from a mining company. That same year, the Civilian Conservation Corps, which was established by President Roosevelt’s New Deal program, flocked to Greenbrier State Forest in droves. They constructed a set of buildings that were, for a few years, called Camp White Sulphur. Though the original buildings are no longer standing, the Forest headquarters are now located in this area.
