About five miles south of Hinton and 23 miles from Beckley is where you will find Bluestone State Park. Located in Southern West Virginia, the park boasts of 2,154 acres. Sitting on the shores the namesake lake the park is an all-time favorite destination for Hinton campers. Bluestone State Park has access to some of the most beautiful water bodies in West Virginia, namely Bluestone Lake and Bluestone River. Established in 1950, both the lake and park borrow their name from the Bluestone National Wild and Scenic River that cuts through the park. Its rugged and mountainous terrain is covered with trees.

Bluestone State Park is well known for its extensive shorelines along the 2,040-acre Bluestone Lake making it a mecca for water-oriented folks. Anglers can expect to catch bass, crappie, and bluegill from Bluestone Lake and Bluestone River. Bluestone Lake is open for boating and is equipped with several boat ramps. But this lake isn’t the only thing that draws those with an RV here. Many come here to enjoy swimming and picnicking. Book an RV in Summers County and enjoy eight miles of trails traversing through the park. Hikers will appreciate watching wildlife, gorgeous scenery, and learn about the diverse flora.

Getting Outdoors

Bluestone State Park is such a fun place to park your rental RV and get outdoors. While here try hiking on one of the many amazing trails available. The trails take visitors through the wooded park and along the scenic lake. Cliffs and waterfalls can be spotted along the trails. For avid hikers be sure to check the nearly 10 mile Bluestone Turnpike Trail that connects Bluestone State Park to the nearby Pipestem Resort State Park. Other popular trail includes Big Pine Trail, Boundary Trail, Cabin Trail, Overlook Trail, and Rhododendron Trail.

Bluestone State Park is also a popular boating spot. There are several boat launching areas of varying sizes scattered along Bluestone Lake. You may bring your boat or rent one at the on-site concession. Check with the park office before launching as extra rules may apply. But Bluestone Lake isn’t just secluded to boaters; it is also open for anglers, so don't forget your fishing pole.

When you book an RV rental in Hinton, during the summer, there are a number of activities to choose from including swimming. During the warmer months, head to the swimming pool for endless fun. This outdoor pool is open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. It is a nice place for campers to cool off after a long day of exploring the park. Camping at Bluestone State Park

Bluestone State Park has two RV-friendly campgrounds where you can stay with your Hinton camper rental. Both the Old Mill Campground and the Meador Campground are pet-friendly so feel free to bring Chip along.

These rustic campgrounds offer 77 campsites with about 22 sites being equipped with electric hookups. Larger sites can accommodate trailers of up to 40 feet. Amenities offered include a dump station, hot showers, bathhouse, and water spigots.

Exploring the Area

When you book an RV rental near Bluestone State Park, there are a number of local attractions to visit. Both nature lovers and history buffs will find plenty of outdoor opportunities in the Bluestone Area and New River Gorge Region. The nearby recreational facilities offer great summer and winter activities. While in the area, consider making a stopover at the Bluestone Wildlife Management Area. Located in Forest Hill, this 17,632-acre wildlife area borders Bluestone State Park on the northwest corner. This facility allows the hunting of deer, fox, muskrat and wild turkeys. Love fishing? Get yourself a valid West Virginia license and get ready to catch dinner at Indian Creek and Bluestone Lake. Bass, panfish, muskellunge, and trout are in plenty. There are over 20 miles of recreational trails open for hiking and horseback riding. For the adventurous rock climbing opportunities are abound here.

In downtown Hinton, rail enthusiasts will find a beautiful historical museum. Built-in 1991, Hinton City Railroad Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the railroad in Hinton dating back to C&O Railway. On display are railroad historical artifacts including old train exhibits, hats, lanterns, tools and uniforms.

Three Rivers Avian Center in Brooks is another nice facility worth making a stop. As the name suggests, this is a conservation center for injured and endangered birds. Raptors, birds of prey, owls, hawks, and eagles are some of the birds housed in this center. The center operates seasonally or by booked appointments; therefore, it is advisable to call in advance to confirm whether it is opened.

Pick up your motorhome rental in Hinton and head to the picturesque Sandstone falls about 20 miles from the park. This is one of the largest and most scenic falls along New River. Sandstone Falls measures 25 feet long and 1,500 feet wide. There are several overlooks to get the perfect photo and views. Sandstone Falls Boardwalk enables visitors to see the different islands and kayaking below the falls is a fun way to spend some time with the family.
